Potatoes

This is mainly notes for myself so that I can remember later on what I planted, and also to play around with LJ's rich text option...

• Lady Christl - First Early - waxy potato - disease resistent
  


• Riviera - First Early - can be left for early bakers  - virus resistant
  


• Edzell Blue - Second Early - floury potato, good for steaming/microwave/roasting (but not boiling) - heritage variety
  


• Nicola - Second Early - waxy - eelworm resistant
  

At present, the seed potatoes are in egg boxes on the bedroom windowsill.  Their 'rose ends' - the end with the most eyes/shoots (and it's pretty hard to tell which end it is with some of them...) is upwards and I'm supposed to plant them out when the shoots are around 2cm long.  This arcane ritual is know as 'chitting' and is supposed to help them to get off to a good start.

Jerusalem artichokes are planted

Richard got the bed for the Jerusalem artichokes prepared while Henry and I worked on the raspberries.  A trench one spade deep and three spades wide, forked over at the bottom and 3 inches of compost added.  Soil returned, growmore and iron sulphate added and raspberries put in.
