Dreamwidth problems continued

We've established that most (but not absolutely everyone) can read my Dreamwidth page, except me.

[livejournal.com profile] waveney thinks it's a DNS corruption and should spontaneously clear within three days.  We're getting pretty close to that three day limit now...  (I have no idea what he's talking about, but he does!)

It's not my browser, as other Firefox users are fine.

It seems unlikely that it's anything at my end as I had no problems accessing Dreamwidth in the past.

If it's still down tomorrow, then the DNS theory is bust.  I'm not sure what to do if that happpens.

It's certainly working ok for me.

Have you (or he) tried flushing the DNS cache?

You (and waveney) go through it step by step.

Some thoughts:
1) try it from different computers in the same house (sharing the same internet connection)
2) if you are on wifi, try it wired
3) find someone with a laptop for whom it works, get them to come around and see if it still works
4) get waveney to trace which sites your browser is trying to access to download the bits of your DW page and then ping them individually.

etc.

Good luck!

Unfortunately the DNS theory seems unlikely, since the time-to-live value on the watervole.dreamwidth.org record is set very low, only ten minutes.

Exactly what happens when it doesn't work for you?

Ah, my error message is different. Not a connection reset:

"Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at watervole.dreamwidth.com."

Curiouser and curiouser

That would almost certainly be because Dreamwidth is in .org, not .com.

You are correct, http://www.dreamwidth.com/ redirects to http://watervole.dreamwidth.org/, so as I've said before I can get to dreamwidth, but not watervole's journal.

[identity profile] waveney.livejournal.com 2010-06-04 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It is almost certainly a corrupted record in either our DSL router/firewall or at the first bit of the network at Demon. I have seen this sort of problem before, they self correct when the normal 3 day limit of DNS caching expires.

Have you tried clearing out your cookies? I feel this sort of thing shouldn't be necessary, but it does work sometimes.

Is it conceivable that you have some sort of malware which is intercepting and redirecting web traffic? Have you noticed anything else odd when browsing recently?

Everything else seems to be fine. It's just Dreamwidth that's affected.

OK, I can confirm that I cannot access watervole.dreamwidth.com from either Virgin Media or Cambridge University (Ja.net). As Ja.net uses Virgin Media as its carrier this does not entirely surprise me. I could go and speak to our curator of the DNS, but I doubt I would understand any words he uttered and particularly not in the order in which they are placed.

Oh, and I should add that I can get to www.dreamwidth.com

[identity profile] j-lj.livejournal.com 2010-06-04 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also on Virgin Media and can see
http://watervole.dreamwidth.org but not http://watervole.dreamwidth.com/

I am on PlusNet/BT and have the same result.

www.dreamwidth.com redirects to www.dreamwidth.org, but this doesn't seem to work for individual blogs.
