Chap I worked with for four year, sharing an office with him alone, did not annoy each other, intelligent and good-natured, not bigoted in any way that I could find, read the Mail from cover to cover every day. I used to flip through for the cartoons and the racing - plus the film reviews on Friday. I also used to point out the way it contradicted itself... He just grinned.
I read the cartoons when I visit. I read chunks of the rest when desperate for reading material at breakfast. But about half way though I usually realise that the information content is so low that I'd be better off inventing most of it.
I can't figure out if the appeal is the 'gossip' factor, or if it's just habit.
In our father's defence, I would add that he reads usenet more than he reads the paper, and has done so for about 30 years (and a usenet committe member). He uses acronymns like RTFM, and campaigned against the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill. Not a gossip-ey person by any stretch of the imagination. So I think taking the Daily Mail is a habit of the necessary evil type, like mowing the lawn and pruning the roses. Also, anything for a quiet life.
I tend to go into the supermarket on my way to university and just read the headlines on the Mail, Express and Telegraph. That way I get enough rage to wind up my clockwork spring so I can keep functioning through the day.
9 times out of 10 the Express will have Diana on the front page and otherwise this song is accurate.
I used to work with a bunch of Sun readers. When Gulf War two broke out one asked for a newspaper and I asked if he hadn't got his Sun. He said yes he did but that this was important news so he'd like a 'real' newspaper :-)
Great song - and thankfully very instructive, thanks to the titles:-)! Do not think we have no tabloids here - and Daily Mail is only a weakling against our Blesk /Lightning/ and you wouldn´t believe who reads it...:-)
That's so accurate. After watching this video, I sat in Cafe Nero yesterday and grabbed The Daily Mule - the front page was about a woman who was fined because she sold a goldfish to a child. It's nice to see the DM's editor has got his/her priorities right...
