The tube isn't for anything serious. She's premature, so she can't suck strongly yet, so she needs to get extra fuel and the milk comes via the tube.

Many congratulations on the new arrival, and best of luck to the new parents! I don't follow LJ closely any more so had been looking for you at Eastercon and it wasn't until later that someone mentioned in passing that Oswin was the reason why you weren't there. It's the best possible reason to have missed it :).
