American fanfic in British fandoms
It's too hot to do anything, so I'm looking for random fanfic.
I wish to God there was a tag for 'writing for a fandom set in my own country'.
There are non-natives who can pull it off -I've met some - but so many make gaffes that jar on a native.
I've just tried two highly rated Merlin fanfics and dropped out of them both in minutes.
Are there any British people who really don't know that Buckingham Palace is at the end of Pall Mall?
When do you see anyone in present-day London wearing a twin set and pearls?
I remember my American beta reader laughing her head of at my gaffes when writing Stargate - but at least I made sure I HAD and American beta reader.
Anyone care to rec me good stories with plots in any of the following:
Sharpe, Merlin, Arthurian legends, LOTR, Avengers, Lois and Clarke, MASH, anything involving the British Navy, Stargate SG-1, anything you think I might like, SF shows in general. I may even try shows I don't know if the tale is really good, but it would have to be excellent and not going on endlessly about how wonderful two people think the other is.
I don't care if it has sex or not or what the pairings are. What I'm after is a good story that has a strong plot, that has depth in the background, feels like the author really knows the universe and fits the culture it is written for.
My only requirement is that it isn't too dystopian. There are times when I like bleak, downbeat fic, but not today. That's not saying I want fluffy, or all sweetness and light, not even that I forbid character deaths - I just don't want to go too far downhill.

When Darcy is given the chance to change the past he takes it, but time is more difficult to alter than it at first appears. Soon he enlists the help of someone with whom his future should have been -- and could be -- entwined.
No, don't wince! Yes, it is a rather bizarre premise for a P&P fic, but what makes this story is the characterisation. Really very good.

Pet Project

major_characters: Hermione Granger, Severus Snape
characters: Hermione Granger, Severus Snape
description: Hermione overhears something she shouldn't and decides that the house-elves aren't the only ones who need protection.
Yes, this is a SS/HG story, but that isn't the only focus. Very plotty, fantastic world-building in regard to things like Arithmancy and Wizarding culture - and House Elves, this has the best portrayal of House Elves EVER.
Shadows Of The Future
author: Stormqueen873
universe: Star Wars
url: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3054756/1/Shadows_of_the_Future
ranking: Very Good
length: Long Novel
words: 119352

description: Obi-Wan lost the duel on Mustafar, but instead of dying, he finds himself on a ship leaving Tatooine, with his old Master and a familiar young boy. As events begin to unfold, can he stop the future he knows from occurring? TPM AU, ObiAniQui bonding.
I'm not really a fan of Episode 1-3 of the Star Wars saga, but this AU is a very good read. How can one change the past when one has no idea what caused things to go pear-shaped in the first place? Very character-driven story, very friendshippy.
Crumpets Arent My Style
author: Marz1
universe: Stargate, Harry Potter
url: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1995083/1/Crumpets_Arent_My_Style
ranking: Very Good
length: Long Novel
words: 125755
category: Crossover, AU Divergent Timeline
major_characters: Jack O'Neill, Harry Potter
characters: Jack O'Neill, Harry Potter
description: General O'Neil is sent on a nice relaxing dipolmatic mission in the U.K. Of course there's bound to be trouble when he runs into a murderous cult called the Death Eaters, who've some how gotten their hands on alien technology.
Yes, a Stargate crossover with Harry Potter. And it works really well.
My favourite quote:
"Crucio!"
Pain.
Pure, simple pain.
O'Neil clenched his jaw and curled up in a ball, but that did nothing to relieve it. It felt like he was dying, but not in any specific manner. After a moment the pain disappeared. He sat up and worked his fingers a bit to get the circulation going again. A little worse then electrocution, still not as bad as being burned to death with acid. Ah, the fun comparisons you can make after being captured by the Go'auld.
"Ouch," he said, mildly.
Now We Have A Map Of The Stars
author: Zauberer Sirin
universe: Doctor Who
url: http://community.livejournal.com/saxonvoters/111870.html
ranking: Very Good
rating: Teen
length: Long Novel
words: 117982
category: AU Divergent Timeline, Timey-wimey, Friendship, Redemption, Romance
major_characters: Tenth Doctor, Simm!Master
characters: Tenth Doctor, Simm!Master, Martha Jones
description: Total AU: Martha never left and the Master was never killed. The Doctor keeps his promise of taking care of him. Sort of. Martha helps. Kind of. And then Dalek plot happens.
Characterisation and plot are intertwined in this one, because the timey-wimey plot all hangs on a fateful decision which hasn't happened yet.
Walk Out With Me To The Unknown Region
author: Rutsky
universe: Doctor Who
url: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=7943
ranking: Excellent
length: Long Novel
words: 89174
category: AU Divergent Timeline
major_characters: Jack Harkness, Lynda Moss
characters: Jack Harkness, Lynda Moss
description: Given the slightest opportunity, chance, the universe's bastard child by chaos, tends toward life.
This follows on from "Parting of the Ways"; what happened on the Game Station, afterwards. This story may or may not be AU, but it's an interesting idea: What if Jack wasn't the only one touched by the Bad Wolf, not the only one dragged back into life? Unfortunately, the summary of the story was so vague that I never read this story until it was recced on Calufrax.
Re: More recs
the American Embassy really isn't in the part of London where you can 'just nip across the road to a store' and Google streetview is easy to use.
O'Neill crosses the road when the lights change in his favour, yet still almost gets hit by a car when he suddenly stops.
The writer is dashing along with a great concept, but not pausing long enough to think about making it believable.
The characterisation is so so.
Good, but not good enough for me to keep on reading.

Most aren't slash and there isn't a huge amount of sex involved (apart from one of the Rupert stories "Rupert and the Fairy Spike"), and most have a fair bit of humour.

I don't read a whole lot in the fandom outside my OTP (I am told there are very good Loki/Thor fics and Loki/Tony fics but that is so OOC for how I look at the characters that I can't really bear to read them. In fact, Loki/anyone sets my teeth on edge.)
I presume you have read the stories by Scifigrl47 (and they don't get longer and more plotty than the toasterverse) and Cluegirl over on AO3. The latter writes in several of your mentioned fandoms.

I've no urge to read Loko/anyone for the same reason as you.

'Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Were Assigned by Nick Fury) by Scifigrl47 is also really one long story and stands, the last time I looked, at 236,000 words. Clues dropped in the first story 'Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore' are being picked up three or four stories later. Though I believe that, the last time I looked, the story of hers with the most hits and kudos (putting her at number three in the all time AO3 listings) is 'Four (or Five) Reasons for Kidnapping Tony Stark' which is also one of my favourites.
