Still no lj

Still no LJ. Richard hasn't got around to renewing his hack and LJ support
haven't fixed the root problem.

If my son's old PC gets reconnected with the right bits, then I may be able to
use that. I don't know what the right bits are; I only know that we have them
in the house.

I'm waiting on other people and I find that incredibly frustrating.

I had a good time going swimming with Henry this afternoon. The first time we'd
done it in a very long while. Swimming is so much more fun in company. We
played silly games, practised tumble turns and laughed at each other's attempts
at butterfly stroke. I can float; Henry sinks. I shall miss him so much when
he goes to university.

Swimming? But it's winter over there. Where do you swim?

In a nice warm indoor pool, of course.

Where else? Brits don't go in for outdoor pools (apart from in some gardens), though we swim in the sea when it's warm enough.

I remember an almost-traumatizing experience when I was about 6 and we were visiting England for 2 months while Dad was on sabbatical, and we were at some sort of "camp" (probably the Summer Institute of Linguistics gathering) and those in charge of the children forced us kids to go swimming in an outdoor pool and it was so cold. It must have been theoretically summer.

Actually it wasn't traumatizing, just memorable.

Some may call me not a proper Aussie because I don't like vegimite, but I am a proper Aussie in that I like to swim. I have mixed feelings about heated indoor pools, because they are often hotter than I like. Yes, I don't like swimming in cold water, but I do like swimming in cool water.

I'm not a good swimmer, but I can swim in cold water. When I lived in London, our block in Streatham (originally built in the 1930s) had a full-sized pool. Possibly it was heated in the 1930s, but not when we were there. There's something irresistible about waking on a summer morning, thinking "I'll have a swim before I go to work", and just trotting downstairs, doing a few lengths, then coming up for a shower and breakfast. Just about the only thing that ever made me want to get up half an hour early. I often swam again when I got home in the evening, before dinner. I was probably never so fit in all my life. Then they had to shut the pool because we couldn't afford the maintenance any more, and anyway I had a longer journey to work so couldn't have fitted it in except at weekends.

But I did used to stick with it into the early autumn, when it was really getting quite chilly. The consequence is that when I go to France in the summer, where it's usually pretty hot but the river's usually pretty cold, I can wade straight in and start swimming while my friends, who are much stronger swimmers, are still standing on the bank dipping their toes in and gasping. It takes me only a few strokes to dispel the cold.

I'm not a fun swimmer, though. I don't like having other people in my vicinity, because I'm afraid of bumping into them, I hate splashing, and I'm afraid of getting my face wet. I just like swimming my lengths in a pool, or swimming set distances in the river; over the week, I work up from "round the island" to "as far as the bridge", and then concentrate on reducing the number of strokes I take "to the bridge and back".

I'm somewhat unAustralian in that I can't swim and no one's ever been able to teach me - in fact, I'm living proof that the saying 'fat floats' ain't necessarily true...

But I do like the beach. One of my sisters lives in a small town on the coast, five minutes from a small and relatively empty inlet - I keep telling her I only visit for her beach :-)

Try downloading another browser - it's unlikely that there will be a similar problem with two browsers if it's at your end. Won't help if it's at the LJ side, but then neither will an old PC. Search for Opera or Firefox at downloads.com.

I don't believe either come in a form that's compatible with Acorns.
