More bank hassle

Some of you will remember the problems I was having with my bank in November.  It's still continuing.  It's getting to the point where I am seriously considering changing my bank.

I'm now on my third order for new stationary as they can't seem to get my name right.

In spite of assurances that only the stationary had been affected, it's now clear that at least one online record was changed as we've been getting letters from charities that we support explaining that our direct  debit/gift aid declaration is no longer .

I'm getting increasingly pissed off by reassurances from bank staff saying it's clearly a total coincidence that the Charities Aid Foundation wrote to me saying that our direct debit was no longer valid as Richard's name was no longer on our account, and that there was no possible way that the CAF could know the details of the account name.

That would clearly explain today's identical letter from the RSPB (which quotes the current incorrect account name with total accuracy), and the email I had last month from Paypal explaining my bank account was incorrect, and the letters that I'm confidently expecting to get from the Dorset Wildlife Trust and several other organisations that we direct debit to...

And in the meantime, Asthma UK aren't getting the money I want to give them as the CAF don't have the cash in my charity account to honour the payment...

In essence, Barclays sucks.  I'm seriously considering moving our bank account (and mortgage) to another bank.  If I'm going to have to redo all my direct debits in any case, then changing bank is no extra effort.  Any recommendations?  Good customer service is what counts here.

I can't in all honesty recommend my own bank (which is the Royal Bank of Scotland), but I have heard very good things of the Co-operative Bank.

I've switched to First Direct from Nationwide. Their customer service is excellent, When you ring you get a UK national very quickly who is empowered to sort things out.

When I used their direct debit transfer scheme it all worked apart from Camra (fault unknown) and Barclaycard (who are awful, while the FD person was very helpful).

I've been very happy with First Direct for about fifteen years.

PS If you like, I can send you a recommend a friend card. I'm not sure if it gets you anything, but it gives me £50 if you open an account, which I would then donate to the charity of your choice.

Send me a card. Don't yet know if I'll swap, but if I do, I'll use it.

My address is here - http://watervole.livejournal.com/31531.html

I'll third the recommendation of First Direct, though note that they're cherry-pickers -- they'll only take people with good credit records and who will put a reasonable amount of money through their account.

That wouldn't be a problem. We've an excellent credit record.

I have banked with the Coop for upwards of 20 years now. Mostly for ethical reasons, but they also have very good customer service.

Which Money have a little table of banks rated highest for customer satisfaction: http://www.which.co.uk/money/bank-accounts/reviews/current-accounts/page/which--recommended-providers/

First Direct 88%
The One Account 88%
Co-operative Bank 86%
Smile 85%
Nationwide BS 72%

Thanks, that's very helpful. First Direct and Co-op are starting to look very attractive...

I second the recommendation of the Co-Op. They are lovely to deal with, very efficient and the ethical side is admirable.

Another one for First Direct. Polite, prompt and accurate. Not had any hassle with them.

I've had no problems with the co-op bank. Their call centre is in Skelmersdale, if that makes a difference.

Another one for First Direct. I was shocked - shocked, I tell you! - when I got thirty seconds of recorded message, recently. Of course, one of their two call centres was out of action due to snow, so I suppose I can forgive them!

They are very good: they call you back if and when they say they will, they have excellent online banking, phoning them results in a person, not a "press one for...", they send you free text messages if you want them to alert you of Thing X on your account.

Another vote for First Direct from me.

I have been with the Halifax for six years with no problems after I closed my Barclays account after they made a number of erros on my accounts. Good customer care with a UK based call centre and help full staff in branches.

A few months ago I went into the Bishops Stortford branch to deposit a cheque and the cashier recomended changing the type of current account I had for one with a higher interest rate. I saw a personal advisor within 5 mins and the acount was changed on their system so I got a higher interest rate without them having to change my account number or issue new banking cards or cheque books.

Their fraud department is also very good and have called me a few time to check on any unusual activity on my accounts.

Switch your bank!

You don't owe them any loyalty, because they will never show any loyalty to you, no matter how long you've been with them!!

Which? Magazine have done a lot of looking into this see:
http://www.which.co.uk/money (click on Bank Accounts on the Green Bar or scroll down to the Best Rates table and click on the Bank Accounts Tab) where it mentions that, for instance, First Direct get an 88% customer satisfaction rating and will give you £100 if you switch to them, however you need to pay £1,500 in per month or get a monthly £10 fee.

HSBC have the best in branch customer service Ive experienced. I set up a savings account bacially nfor a cheque Id received while I was in process of trying to make Daves account a joint one and didnt have anywhere to put the cheque. I walked down to the appointment on a cold day - they insisted on bringing me a coffee - apologised four times for a wait of about three minutes while the guy finished his previous appointment and set evertyhing up and explained everything very clearly. I fidn their telephone banking easy to deal with as well.
