Photo hosting

I've just been trying out the 'macro' facility on my shiny new camera.  This enables even a klutz like me to take good close up photos.  I can see that I will have the urge to put photos on the web.

Thus, a question - what is the best place for me to keep my photos?

Things that matter to me are that it's free, that it has good tagging facilities and is easy to use.

I like flickr. It's easy to upload photos, you can add tags to your heart's content (although if you want a tag with a space in it you have to put the whole thing in quotes). The drawback is that there is a limit to how much you can upload per month and how many photos it will show in total on a free account.

Well I use photobucket but there are others that swear by Fliker but I can't get on with that

Why? What are the drawbacks of Flickr?

None that I can specify I just don't like the feel of it. Probably because I was very used to Photobucket before I tried fliker. It's probably easier to say what I like about PB I like the way you can create 'albums' in Photobucket and can continue to down load any photo directly into them if you consider it suitable, and it has plenty of space for tags though I don't use them. It's great for bulk uploading and has a better editing suit than I have on my computer. Perhaps if some one does reply with their reasons why flicker is best you can compare them.

YOu're right - it is easy to edit pictures!

Flickr is certainly a common one. One thing that may make it attractive for you is that it's been used by cons, where individual members post photographs, tagged to make them available to a wide audience.

The 365 Project isn't a general-purpose photo hosting site, but it might be of interest. The concept is of documenting your year with one photo per day.

I'm very happy with flickr and the tagging is very powerful, though I'm paying for it. If you do try out a free account, beware that the limitations are carefully designed to try and encourage you to upgrade to a paid account ($24.95/year)...

Flickr. Or for a second choice, Flickr. 3rd alternative? Flickr. There really is no other choice. Fast, simple, easy to use, edit facilities, excellent tagging, brilliant forums for groups, and then there are the BigLab options to play around with your images. You can also embed into a variety of blog options, RSS feeds... The main limitation for the free account is the 200 limit and also the lack of lots of folders, but you could always create a second account if necessary.

I use both Flikr and Photobucket. I'm three different free accounts on Flikr as a family archive. And Reapermum on Photobucket for frivoling here.

I prefer Flikr but you have more space on Photobucket.

Another vote for flickr, but I hope you'll store images that you wish to keep offline; optical media (CD, DVD etc) is probably the most reliable long-term storage available atm. Your original file is as precious as a negative, whether you shoot jpeg or raw, so you should look after them IMO.

Macro is fun, I'll look forward to seeing your pictures. :-)

I use Flickr and I am very happy with it. However, you only get 100 Mbytes/month for free, more than that and you have to pay. But perhaps that's enough for you?
