Dreamwidth

I've noticed a sudden spurt on my flist of people going over to Dreamwidth.  I wonder if that's because, like me, people got a Dreamwidth account as a backup to LJ, but when the time came to renew their LJ account they made a conscious decision to get a paid DW account instead?

Anyone care to comment?  (It was the ability to search my own back entries properly that was the killer application for me)

That was certainly the case for me.

I'm just so impressed with Dreamwidth and how they're doing things, and I want to support them. I'm also thrilled to have maia as my username - it was already taken on LJ by the time I got my first account in 2003. And, since I now regret creating a separate second LJ, I am thrilled to be able to integrate them both back into one journal.

It still has way too few people on it who I want to read for my interest. I refresh LJ several times a day, DW I can get away with once a week. OK, I may just not realise who a number of people are on DW (and they don't realise who I am), but for me it's still a long way under critical mass.

Also, having just looked at my 'circle', it seems that very few actually post on DW. A few post on DW and auto-copy to LJ (so I read them there, with everyone else, and don't switch to answer on DW usually) but at least half of my 'circle' haven't posted on DW in the last month and several have never posted at all (I haven't, for that matter). There are only a few who I read here (you, catsittingstill, 7rin) who post at all frequently.

(Totally OT: I saw a photo of Princess Anne the other day which looked very much like you, in fact I had to read the caption to be sure it wasn't you *g*...)

I got my dreamwidth account about a year ago, partly as a sort of backup when other backup places (Insane Journal, Greatest Journal) seemed to be defunct, and partly because LJ seemed to be doing more and more stupid things. I'd been meaning to start cross-posting for a while but was too busy to do it for last eight months or so. I also started noticing interesting fannish stuff happening there.

It's the ad-free aspect that I find really appealing on Dreamwidth. I'll probably convert my free account there to a paid one soon to support that. I have a permanent LJ account (a anon gift) but I'm sceptical about how long that will remain ad-free. And every time I logged out or got logged out of LJ, I'd see adverts on the home page. Because of the permanent account on LJ, I'll keep going on a dual, cross-posting basis for the moment.

I intend to continue cross-posting, but Dreamwidth is my main account now. I also like the way they distinguish between 'subscribe' and 'give access'.

Are there adverts on LJ? Let's hear it for AdBlock Plus! :-)

As for Dreamwidth, I'm on enough forums and similar systems, so the only reason I'd move there is because everyone else has gone there first...

Mm, this is how I feel too (both observations!)

(I search my back LJ entries using [livejournal.com profile] ljarchive, which also means I have a local copy of everything. Although it doesn't include polls, for some reason.)

I never see adverts on LJ while I'm logged in, but if I access my journal whilst logged out, they are on the right-hand side of the screen - although I rarely see them as I generally read with images off and no Flash (hate it). I have a basic account (i'm a cheapskate!) with no intention of 'upgrading' to the ad-supported variety.

I have no intention of moving from LJ unless it is about to go bankrupt or change things around so radically that it annoys me.

I prefer DW, and like you I started posting there with automatic forwarding to LJ. But all my comments come on LJ, so I think for ease of archiving I'll drop the DW side and go back to LJ. I notice your comments are on LJ, not DW.

The people have spoken.

I hadn't realised you were on DW, or I'd have swapped you to my DW filter and started commenting there.

Have you tried giving access to everyone you know who is on Dreamwidth? You might find that makes a difference.

I did work hard to grant access when I set up the account, but never got comments there. I think I don't want to split my comments now, so will only use LJ.
