Freecycle

Just Freecycled a Jerusalem artichoke and some chicken wire.

Turned out it was the same person who wanted most, which made collection easy as they were both at the allotment.  Discovered she was the niece of a friend of mine, which was a nice bonus.

I've met a lot of very pleasant people via Freecycle.

If there were still a Phoenix, "just Freecycled a Jerusalem artichoke and some chicken wire" would surely belong on the back page. :-P

I've met a lot of very rude people with well-developed senses of entitlement, but then I run the local 2,500 member group and get all the complaints. I'm in an area where people aren't keen on reading the guidelines.

Is there a case for splitting it into a couple of smaller groups?

[identity profile] esmeraldus-neo.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, because people would try to join several anyway.

Youngstown and Boardman are essentially the same town, and we'd have a hell of a time enforcing that, and we're the closest group for most of the surrounding rural area.

Youngstown is the city, and while it's got smaller townships surrounding it, they're not far enough away to have distinct identities of their own, if you see what I mean. It's not THAT big a city. "Liberty" is just another part of town rather than a different town.

I don't know, maybe splitting it would be the way to go, except I don't know how we'd do it. If we split it north/south, one group would be rich and one group would be poor and inner city.

If there's not a distinct identity, then you're probably right. Pity. I think people behave slightly better when they identify as a community.

There again, I had an Offer post rejected and had to repost it because I put down the location as "Portsmouth" which was apparently unacceptable and, instead, had to put "Southsea" which was ok.

Portsea island (on which Portsmouth sits) is about five miles long and three miles wide at the most...!

I've met a lot of very pleasant people via Freecycle.

I have nothing to do with it, largely because [livejournal.com profile] caimbeul14, who uses it a lot, tells me that it's populated with vultures looking for things to flog off for a profit at boot fairs.

Trust me, no one would car boot the chicken wire I just gave away!

Likewise the Jerusalem artichokes. People took suitable quantities to plant, not to sell.

The manky bit of fence I gave away last year would never sell, but it kept their dog out of their pond.

I still occasionally chat to the lady who took my play pen and her daughter is sweet.

The house plants I gave away were in ugly pots, so no car boot value there

I'm sure some stuff gets car-booted, but I'm not giving away computers or DVDs.

A lot of stuff has no value and would go right in the bin, except that someone else happens to want just that.

If it's actually worth a few pence then I give it to charity shops.

*waves* we ended up Freecycling the playpen onwards to another lady. Katelyn had decided that it was actually a prison by this point, while the other lady reported back that her baby boy seemed to love the protection it gave him from his big sister. Ho hum :)

The raspberry vcanes you gave us have started to fliwer too *whee!*

Waves back!

How lovely to know that the play pen has now moved on to another baby.

Hurrah for the raspberries!

Yes, there are some people like that, but, for instance, I got rid of a load of bubble wrap and polystyrene packing nuggets which had been cluttering up space in my place for ages so it does have its benefits.

See the comment below from [livejournal.com profile] sophiedb who got my old playpen and has now freecycled it on to another mum for another toddler.
