Library Thing

I've finally succumbed to Library Thing.  I've been playing around with Visual Bookshelf on Facebook and thinking "Why can't you give books a rating, etc?"

So, I joined Library Thing, because it can.

It'll be  a very slow process inputting books as the shoulder will only let me do a few at a time, but I don't think I'll need to input that many for it to start giving me good recommendations.

Do you have a webcam? [livejournal.com profile] major_clanger set it up as a barcode scanner, and can enter books on Library Thing in the time it takes to swipe one :-) It doesn't work so well on US imports or older books though.

Only books with ISBN numbers, though. So many of mine are too old for that...

Wow, that is impressive. How did he do this?

(Sorry for the late reply to this)

It was actually Booxter that I used, although you can export a book list from it to Library Thing. Booxter takes the input from a webcam, reads the barcode and then queries various online databases to find the book details. I found that it read about 80% of books right away, and then most of the rest it could find the details of if you entered the ISBN or Library of Congress code manually.

This seems to only be available on the Mac. Oh well :(
