The Ceremonial Raddish!

Today we ate the first thing from the allotment that we had planted ourselves.  (We'd already had rhubarb and spinach, but theydon't count as they were left by the previous plot-holder).

We had an entire raddish each!

The great thing about raddishes is that they're dead easy to grow from seed and reach maturity quickly.  And even when the leaves are looking like a lace doiley from flea beatle, the raddish in the soil below is still fine and tasty!

So, if you want to try growing something really easy and testing out your non-existant green fingers, surprise yourself - buy a packet of raddish seeds and do just what it says on the packet.  In two month's time, you'll be eating your own raddishes and believe that you really can grow something.

If you have kids, buy them a packet and let them discover the magic as well.

(whimper) But I don't like raddish!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. 8-)

It sound yummy to me. I wonder if you had any problems with extremely dry weather; I had to fight for every plant because the soil had turned in a strange mixture of dust and sand. Fortunately Monday brought a long-expected rain and hopefully it will help. Actually the change is visible - all the trees and plants revived, the range of "spring greens"(I mean a colour) became wider. Beautiful!
Of course I have found some slugs...

It rained once (a shower) in the whole of April. April is normally a wet month over here. We had to do a lot of watering and the soil was like dust on the surface. When you hoed the weeds, the soil tried to blow away. I've never seen it that bad before.

We've finally got rain too, and I am so relieved. I'm just waiting for the slugs... We've just ordered some nematodes. They're expensive and probably not worth it for a farm, but I'd rather use those on the allotment than slug pellets as they don't harm thrushes and other wildlife.

Why is it all the stuff I don't like is easy to grow?

BTW, I'm going to be a little brat to one of my favorite editors:

>flea beatle

Is this John, Paul, George or Ringo?

Okay, I'm leaving now before things start flying at me.
