And for those who keep saying it's no use us trying to reduce CO2 emissions because China will totally overtake us and drown out any improvements we make-

In other words, they aren't perfect either, but they're making serious efforts as they will suffer just as much damage from climate change as we will. Can other countries develop their own versions of Dongtan?

The high school at Amaroo, the next suburb north of here, (actually its what you would call a K-10), although connected to the grid, generates almost all its electricity from roof-mounted solar cells and a funky wind turbine out the front. The hot water is also used to warm buildings in winter. In summer, natural ventilation is used to cool them. There is no air conditioning. Storm water is collected in rainwater tanks and used for various tasks. Apparently, it's saved so much money that the ACT government is retro-fitting the system to other schools in the territory.

That's really cool! Especially the lack of need for air conditioning. (and the water saving too - that's big points in Australia)

I'm really pleased that it's saved money. It's far far easier to be green if you save cash as well. (One reason why I'm getting a lot of fringe benefits from my quest to cut down on electricity - it's doing wonders for my bills!)
