Google scores again

I got a phone call yesterday to say that the hospital had had a cancallation and I could visit the department of oral surgery today (instead of in January). I accepted with alacrity and was there half and hour early this morning.

The doctor's diagnosis was exactly what I'd concluded myself with the aid of Google. Teeth grinding.

It's improved a lot as my stress levels have gone down, but I'm still getting some pain in the tooth and my jaw muscles were sore when he squeezed them.

He's taken an impression of my teeth to make a gaurd for wearing at night. Let's see if it helps.

Glad to hear it's on track for getting sorted.

Are you a SMOF or a Frilly Fran?

Over on the Eastercon Yahoo Bounce, Steve Cooper has made a poll, as follows:

I am proposing to organise a convention for past, current, future and potential con-runners. However the question of the name, what to call it is proving a difficult decision. Traditionally these conventions have included the word SMOF in the title. However, in the UK at least, this term has come to describe a sub-section of con-runners, although what that sub-section is seems to be vague. The alternative is to emphasise the con-running nature of the convention with a title such as ConCon, although this name does now live under the threat of a frilly Fran Dowd. So I'm asking the question in this poll. Tradition - we have a SMOFcon, or Frilly Fran we have a con-running con

Join me in the ConCon Chorus Line !!!

To me, the term refers to all con-runners, therefore, I'd call myself a SMOF.

Having said that, I don't mind in the least what you call it - I still want to come!

I'm been wearing one for nearly twenty years - not the same one, obviously, it would be pretty messy by now. It's reduced the damage to my teeth, which is why I got it, but oddly enough I never seemed to experience any pain from the grinding, so I can't offer any predictions on that.

I get tremendous achiness in my jaw but not pain as such. Is it toothache you're getting? that might need fixing anyway if you've actually damaged a tooth.

I've never been able to wear it consistently enough to break the pattern of teeth grinding which is what i was told it would do, unlock my jaw - wearing it makes me feel sick and keeps me awake, I tend to wake up in the middle of the night and drag it off while not compos mentis.

When I destress a bit the teeth grinding tends to go down as well anyway.

I am not good at having large things in my mouth :)

Mostly jaw-ache, but tooth-ache if I am stressed or chew too much on that side of the mouth.

I'm sure I read somewhere that some sorts of teeth grinding can be down to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I think it might have been vitamin B6, but I could be wrong. You could try some supplements and see if they help.

At least he didn't flatly contradict your own diagnosis.

I hope it helps, too.

Grinding furthered my tooth loss

At least you've caught in time. Due to a combination of bad tooth fiber and poor dentistry when I was a pup, bruxism helped further my teeth falling apart. Ah, the joys of obsessive-compulsiveness.

I now have a full set of dentures, which is a tough way to deal with the problem, but better than pain.

Good luck, Judith. There are all manner of appliances and magic gadgets they have these days. I'm sure they'll find something to handle the situation on all levels.

Well yay for some progress!
