Why do people hate saving money?

My mum phones her children every Sunday evening. Has done for ever.

My sister has just moved to London and hasn't got a landline yet. My mum says she can't phone her mobile, because it's too expensive. I tell her that if she uses my phone provider (no change of line rental, keep your BT number and service, no monthly cost) she can phone my sister for 2p a minute at weekends.

"You told me that before," she says crossly.

So WHY in the name of heaven is she so resistant about actually doing something that takes at most 10 mins of effort, would allow her to phone her daughter, and, incidentally, would also slash her phone costs when phoning my brother in Canada! (I can phone places like Australia for half a penny a minute)

Ah, but you are forgetting, mothers, especially those who were around for WW2, are one of the most stubborn creatures known to man! Even more so if they happen to be grandmothers! ;-p (I have mine as perfect examples!)

Change is scary, that's why.

Yes, and also sometimes it's difficult for older people to learn new things, even things the rest of us think of as incredibly simple.

Sorry, that was me. LJ has developed an annoying habit of kicking me out.

Yeah - my mum still won't sign up for Internet banking even though she bitches all the time about how she never has time to go into the bank and about how slow cheques are to clear and stuff. I keep telling her that she can do it all online and
1) it's quicker than cheques
2) she can do when she remembers at three in the morning rather than waiting until the next working day that she can actually get to the bank.

But I think kerravonsen is right - it's fear of the unknown.
And possibly bloody mindedness that her daughter is the one telling her about it, she's all clueless when it comes to computers and this is messing with her concept of the parent/child relationship.

It all seems too complicated? :)
