Henry's going to Manchester university

[livejournal.com profile] exalted_mugwump just got his A-level results.

A,C,C. (maths, further maths, physics) Problem, he needed A,B,B for his first choice university. However, acting on a tip that someone gave him several months ago, he immediately phoned Manchester (his first choice university) on his moblie. On the fifth attempt, he got through and asked if they still wanted him. They said yes!

I don't know who that person was, but I owe them a mega vote of thanks.

What course? I presume you mean Manchester Metropolitan rather than UMIST or Salford?

I did BEng Robotics at Salford, commuting on the bus from Burnley every day.

Or indeed the proper Manchester Uni - The Victoria University Of Manchester (aka Owens, not the *spit* jumped up poly, the *sneer* getting-above-itself tech college or the *snigger* poor-cousin-down-the-road you mention above).

Just read your comment below - hadn't heard about the merger. Must read my alumnus mag more often. It was only while I was there that UMIST split from Owens in the first place and got permission to award its own degrees. Before that it was officially the science and technology department (hence the name), and the students actually graduated from Owens.

Sorry :-)

Congrats to him!

If he's interested in the sf thing, I know Manchester has a uni group called Warped which he can look up when he gets there. But aside from all that Manchester is a great city to live in as a student - if he wants any guidance on interesting places to go and stuff to do when he gets there feel free to pass on my email address.

Warped is great, I was on the committee for a year (it's obviously going to have gone downhill since I left of course ;-). Good bunch of people.

Well done him. And in real subjects as well. I won't find out till Monday how youngest did, she's in Germany till then and arranged for a friend to collect her results.

Wonderful news! Manchester is great for stew-dees.

Congratulations! Which university? (Manchester has 3, or 4 if you count Salford) and what subject? I went Manchester University myself (properly, "Victoria University of Manchester", colloquially, "Owens"), and had a great time there. It was my first choice too.

[identity profile] alex-holden.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we're both out of date. Apparently Victoria and UMIST have merged to form The University of Manchester (http://www.manchester.ac.uk/).

Well done Henry!

How does the admission process work over there? And what course is he doing? I presume with those subjects that a science course is in order...

Well done to Henry - ACC is not a bad set of marks.
