How to slash your phone bill
I just got my BT bill for this quarter. It's dramatically down. My last bill was for a total of £239 which triggered off a flurry of trying to find better alternatives. One of the reasons it was high was becasue they'd been hiking up the prices on Home HIghway (a precursor of broadband), another was becasue they'd abolished early-morning cheap rate calls on the quiet and the last was because their rates were high overall anyway. I was already using OneTel for international calls, so that adds another £12 to the total making it £251 for the quarter. What's my latest bill?
The current BT bill is for £45. And that includes the line rental and some calls made before I killed the Home Highway, got onto Broadband and registered with other phone companies. It took me a few weeks to get everything sorted out. My total spend on phone calls in the last quarter for all phone companies is £63 including all international calls. I'd expect that to be down a little bit more next quarter as I won't have the calls made on BT adding to the figure (apart from those starting with 08).
I'm now doing all phone calls (apart from 0800, 0845 and 0870 numbers) via call118866 and call1899 One is cheaper for UK phone calls - all my calls cost a flat rate of 2p regardless of time or day or length of call. The other is slightly cheaper for international calls. I can phone
scarlatti or
grumpoldusenaut in America for 1p a minute (plus 2p set up cost). (It's cheaper than OneTel whom I'd previously been using)

Apolgies if I sound like some kind of tacky advert, but I got really pissed off by BT hoiking their prices so high, so I'm singing the praises of the opposition who keep their prices low by relying on word of mouth advertising. Incidentally, I also recommend this site, http://moneysavingexpert.com/ , which is where I learnt about the cheap phone companies.
Some day, I may start using SKYPE as well, that gives free voice calls via the internet. It really ought to be my next step. And I've just heard of a service, that does calls to mobiles for 5p per min instead of 10p, that I really need to look into...

That is very cool about the 1p/minute rate to America. :)

"Hm," the gas bill murmurred, "is that an Helvitica font? Serif fonts are so..." He rustled invitingly.
The phone bill took in the heady perfume of ink. He was so excited that he almost creased himself.
Folding himself rapidly in half, the gas bill made an inviting envelope. The phone bill dived, thrust himself into the dark, secret cavity, and was just about to do something extremely kinky involving a paperclip, when--
The filing cabinet draw was pulled abruptly open.
"Don't need that one any more. I've changed my phone company."
It had been a rip-roaring romance, but alas, the final emphasis was more on the rip...
