Thinking about Dr Who

Cut for spoilers

I've been thinking about the time vortex.

This is all pure speculation on my part, so make of it what you will. Hopefully fans who know more back Dr Who than I will be able to comment.

Let's assume that there is one and only one time vortex and that all Tardisis tap into it somehow. The soul of the Tardis is part of the vortex/linked to it.

The Time Lords (from what I remember of them) were a pretty arrogant lot. They harnessed the power of the vortex and it made them incredibly powerful. Each of them has an awareness of the vortex - it's what gives them that sense of time, of history, of the flow of events and their place within them.

HOwever, linking directly to the vortex is totally over the top. Time Lords are already close to the vortex, if they link to it, the power increase is almost exponential. Not only does it burn them out, it also gives them incredible power.

Sometime in their history, someone did just that. Took the power and became consumed by it. Fell into corruption before you can say 'Dark Lord Sauron'. He was almost a good man before he touched the vortex, but the vortex accelerated what was evil in him and in the few short minutes before he died and regenerated and fell free of the vortex, he not only changed time, but changed himself. He became an evil that it took them a generation to destroy.

All Time Lords know and understand the danger. They would no more touch the vortex than GAndalf would take the ring. They know that it can make them even worse than the things they fight.

Rose joined with the vortex with the best of motives and that helped her survive the pull of evil. Yet, the power was getting to her. IF the Doctor had not pulled her out, who knows what she might have become.

As soon as the Doctor recieved the power, he handed it back to the Tardis. He had the power and must have known that he could use it - to save Jack, to save Linda, to save so many lives. Yet, he chose not to do so. He would have died to save those people - had effectively already made that choice, but he would not risk the vortex for them.

That says that the vortex has the potential to be even more dangerous than the daleks. It takes a Time Lord to know just how dangerous it is.

If the Doctor had not pulled her out, who knows what she might have become.

And she knew it. "I am the bad wolf."

And the character relationships

I loved the kiss. I loved it because we have finally got to a stage where a show with 7 million viewers in a family timeslot on a Saturday evening can show two men kissing.

I wonder if they'll cut it in America...

My Doctor is asexual. (I know there have been very rare cases of romances. Hartnell's doctor had a romance at one point, but even then, it wasn't a very sexual romance.) His relationship with Rose is intense, but platonic. However, I think both Rose and Jack love the Doctor (and possibly one another).

Does the Doctor fancy Jack? Possibly. I'm keeping an open mind on that one. Each regeneration is different.

Well, anybody who's read the bit with Galadriel and Frodo when he offers her the Ring...

I reckon the TARDIS takes over Rose and they become a gestalt for a few minutes (there's something about the "my Doctor" and Billie not doing the chav accent that makes me think this was the TARDIS speaking) - people aren't meant to channel the vortex, but TARDISes are, (courtesy of the Eye Of Harmony). Just like electric powered trains channel thousands of volts and a large amperage, but if a person tried if they'd be fried.

Presumably the Doctor/TARDIS healed Rose after he took the power from her, but he couldn't be saved because he'd have had to give it to someone else to use it to save him.

(if you want to take it further, given the Time Lords' symbiotic link with their ships, the 10th Doctor is therefore the offspring of the 9th and the TARDIS...)

that he could use it - to save Jack, to save Linda, to save so many lives.

I thought he did save Jack at the least....

I thought Rose saved Jack.
