Poi

I bought a pair of poi at the folk festival.

I have the bruises to prove it - grin.

They're fun and I've got the hang of some of the basic moves already. I'm hoping that they may prove to be good exercise for my neck, wrist and shoulders.

Poi are cool. I just discovered that [livejournal.com profile] munquie has left her poi in my house so I dont have to buy new ones until she notices.

Ah, poi. That brings back childhood memories of school in Auckland. I didn't realize they'd been exported from NZ.

Oh, yes, they're quite widespread now. You often find them around at folk festivals. I'll bet some people using them don't even know the Maori origin.

Maybe you can teach me how to use mine? I bought mine at the Cambridge Folk Festival last year and they've sat in their storage bag pretty much constantly since.

Be glad to. Call round any time. You may also find http://www.homeofpoi.com/ helpful. There's a free set of basic lessons there.

I may take the piss out of her teaching technique but [livejournal.com profile] adelheid has taught a few people to do a basic Poi trick.

PS J - bring them on Saturday if you want.

Yep, poi are fun. Although I haven't managed to do anything *with* them. I think, right now, mine are on loan to someone in k's troupe - certainly the handy "how to learn poi" book I also bought got loaned.

And it's just a great word to say. Poi!

I think "Toi Toi grass" is more fun to say. 8-)
