 Apparently there is a need to 'save Christmas'

Who knew?

The kind of Christmas my family enjoy is in no danger at all.

Get together with our loved ones for the day, share tasty (mostly vegan) food. Swap fairly inexpensive presents.  Play board games.

 

Not all all worried by lack of turkeys caused by a shortage of people desperate enough to work to low paid, dangerous and unpleasant meat factories.

 

Not at all worried by lack of lorry drivers to bring all those expensive overseas presents either.

 

If you have a close-knit family, none of these are necessary. 

 

All I want for Christmas is for the Covid rate to drop to a point where my son and his finance feel safe to stop shielding, so that they can be with us.

You have to translate from Boris-speak. He means "Save the profits of the turkey farmers, the toy importers, the travel agents, and all those people who look to me to maintain their wealth. Because supporting politicians is easier than working."

Aye. The rich might suffer and donate less to the Conservatives.

But there are a worrying number of people on low incomes who over-spend badly at Xmas because they believe that's what their families want.

And an advert based economy that means they may be right...

I don't think it's anything as coherent as that. Johnson says "Christmas" as often as possible, whatever the context, because he thinks the word makes people feel warm and fuzzy, so if he can establish a subliminal connection with it they will like him. That's his primary objective.

Could be. It's a short-hand way of giving an image of a caring family man.

If Boris thinks it is necessary to 'save Christmas', he is surely the one with the power to do so.

I read lots of pessimistic news here... EU is punishing UK hard. I am worried about you. But at present, we have our own worries with that government of ours, our disastrous budget, corruption and inflation and stuff... (Czech Republic, that is).

Don't worry. I'm fine. We live a fairly simple life by UK standards, so we're not missing out on much.

I feel for your country. Our problems are largely short term, yours may not be.

I know that you and your family are all right, you are modest and reasonable ones and I salute to you!

As for my poor country, I don´t see any light at the end of the tunnel...alas.

I wouldn't say the EU is punishing us hard; the problem is essentially self-inflicted.
