 Bloody Brexit.  It's becoming very difficult for small businesses to send stuff from Europe to the UK and vice versa.

 

I've been trying to find a new dice tower for 'Wingspan', an excellent board game - but the one I chose on Etsy is unable to ship to the UK at present because of the extra costs involved.

That's annoying.
The Dice Shop Online has a selection of dice towers, but obviously I have no idea if they are the sort you want for Wingspan:

It should be in the style of a nest box. I've written to ask if they'd like to add one to their range.

They have some good looking stuff.

Not just small companies. Neuhaus is one of the biggest chocolate firms in Belgium, and I can no longer buy directly from their website because of trade barriers.

Ouch. I hope the situation improves in time, but I can't see what the way forward will be if even some large firms don't want to do it.

I'm guessing this is the whole VAT at point of sale malarkey?

Oh my stars! I've just gone and read about it.

I mean, there's no way a small trader on Etsy is going register for UK VAT - it's just too confusing and too much hard work.

Plus, I believe mail costs have gone up as well.

Indeed. Nor many small businesses in general. Quite a few have stopped shipping to the UK.

The same as importing from America, Canada, or the rest of the world, presumably?

As from Jan 1st this year, yes. It's going to screw a lot of things.

I've got a copy of Wingspan still in the plastic here and feel a bit intimidated by it. Is it hard to understand the rules and get playing?

Wingspan is one of the best games I've ever owned. Like you, I didn't unwrap it for a couple of months, but now I play it virtually every day with my husband.

It takes a while to get the hang of it, but play a few games very slowly checking the rules as you go, and you'll be very glad that you did.

I love it, because it works really well as a game, but it also works well for a bird-lover.

eg. Yesterday, I had a bonus card for birds that live in water. Then I picked up a second bonus card for collecting birds that eat fish.

I instantly knew I was onto a good thing as water birds obviously eat lots of fish, and the bird cards reflect that.
