This is a bit of cheat, because I've met you multiple times offline but... I know you participate in various forms of folk music, but do you enjoy any classical (in the broadest sense)?


Classical music mostly sends me to sleep.  I don't dislike it, I just tend to tune out anything that doesn't have words.

The same thing applies to any form of music where I can't distinguish the lyrics.

I guess that's a bit part of the reason why I like folk and filk - the lyrics are to the front of the mix.  Musicals work well in this regard too.

I dislike any form of music where the volume is too loud.

I did once buy 'The Lamentations of the Prophet Jerimiah' after hearing it on Desert Island Discs, but that's one of a very small number of classical items in my music collection.  The others were bought in charity shops, but rarely got more than one listen.

Interesting! I've only recently realised that classical singing emphasises the vowels, while other forms emphasise the consonants, making it easier to hear the lyrics.

Is that Jeremiah song the one that begins, “Incipit lamentatio, Ieremiae prophetae”? I sang that when I was at uni, as part of the Monash Uni Chapel Singers. :)

I don't know. Latin words don't stick in my brain. (unless I understand them)

That's the one! I heard it and fell in love.

I sang it! :-) I was never good enough for solos, but I joined the choir in my first year at university. We rehearsed at lunchtime in the uni chapel.

One of the minor regrets of my life is that inhaled steroids for asthma wrecked my voice to the point where joining a choir would be unwise (I'd lose my voice)

It's a pain, because I love singing.

That is such a shame! I have lost m6 pleasant voice over the years, but I still sing when in the mood. It must be hard fo4 you.

Did you hear what happened to Julie Andrews? Her singing voice was wrecked by an operation that went wrong.

I still sing to myself for pleasure and to my granddaughter, but I can't sing for long periods.

How terribly sad about Andrew's voice.

She can still speak okay, just not sing. Last year I went to see a production of My Fair Lady she had directed. Very good indeed!
