You tube question

How many people can see the occasional captions in this video?
I can see them, but I know several other people can't.

Does anyone know why they're only visible to some people?

(I put a correction to the instructions in the captions, so I'd really like them to be visible...)

I couldn't see the captions until I clicked the CC button. The captions seem to be off by default on any video as even if I turn them on in one video and then play another they aren't present. So presumably not your browser/youtube remembering a prior setting. As to why some people see the captions by default possibly the flash player behaves differently to the html5 player(I'm using the html5 player).

Oh! My bum eyes didn't notice the little CC box (or knew what it was). I clicked the CC and there are CAPTIONS!! YAY!

What time and whereabouts in the frame are they supposed to be?

The first caption is about 6 seconds into the video.

The captions appear near the bottom of the screen.

I can see them after clicking on the "Subtitles/closed captions" button to show them in the player. My language setting is "English (United Kingdom)"; I wonder if the subtitles don't work if your browser defaults to a different language.

YouTube also has a way to add speech bubbles called "Annotations". If you use those, the text always appears over the video regardless of whether Subtitles are turned on in the player.

I couldn't see them, but some fiddling turned the subtitles on and then I could. Not the best solution: best would be to add them to the actual video so they are part of the image.

This was the answer for me too. Enabling subtitles in the Settings menu (cog wheel) in the video.

I think, the default language of my browser is Russian. But it was not the language. When I press the button "subtitles" I can see them!
