ducks

It is a distinct possibility that nothing in this world gives better value for money than two slices of brown bread (white bread isn't very good for them) fed to a flock of hungry ducks by a delighted toddler.

Oswin was laughing and smiling and having a wonderful time, and grandad and myself were having almost as much fun watching her.

She can say 'duck' now and also said 'gull' when one flew overhead.

Ducks make wonderful ambassadors for wildlife. They can fly and walk and swim.  They interact well with people. They have cute ducklings in places where people can go 'ah' over them.  Never underestimate the value of common wild animals.

Though many common wild animals get classed as "nuisances" because they eat things or damage things which we consider to be "ours". And even just "making it dirty" can be classed as "damage". Why else do some people consider pigeons to be nuisances? I loathe those anti-bird spiky things which many buildings have on them to stop birds perching and nesting there. That's a wicked thing to do. Boo! Hiss!

I agree!I can imagine Oswing laughing and enjoying herself and her grand parents with her! I think "duck" is her favourite word?

Ducks are my everyday companions, a noisy lot quacking and splashing just in front of our house. All children here love watching them - however these are wild ducks that won´t come to you to accept food. For this, we have to take our children to Trebon. There are hundreds of hungry wild ducks that lost their natural fear because they know that people will feed them every day. And as this is a mating time, the males (mallards) are exquisitely coloured, simply irresistible!

That is an adorable mental picture :)

Ducks are a definite part of my life - road I drive through town along is over a lagoon, and has large Duck Crossing signs (yes, we slow down), plus the campus I work at, being out of town a bit, has quite a lot of bird life incuding regular families of ducklings in the pools...

Actually, brown bread ain't that good for the either. Best is finely shredded cabbage or kale. Or pea shoots, should you have an artisan greengrocer handy :)

I shall remember cabbage and kale. Thanks.
