Goodbye Mr Chips

Been watching more TV than usual while feeling wiped out with this bug. (day 1: sore throat; day 2:runny nose; day 3:feeling wobbly; day 4: aches and pains in legs)

Some of the old classic black and white movies are still hard to beat. I've been watching 'Goodbye Mr Chips' which is essentially a simple story of a shy school teacher who gradually finds out how to relate to boys. It never lays the se
ntiment on too thick and that's probably why it succeeds in making me cry.

The tragedy of war can be just as effectively played in the reading of a list of names as it can in bloody scenes of fighting and when the name of the school's former German master is included in the roll, that's the point when I start to
cry.

No one makes speeches about why his name is included. There are no long talks on the brotherhood of mankind. The audience are assumed to be intelligent enough to work it out for themselves.

If you've never seen it, I recommend it. It works for a cynic like me...
