Fitness around the house

Due to asthma and other issues, I often have weeks where I get very little exercise.  Hence, several times a year I have to work hard to get fit again.

I caught part of a BBC programme about a month ago that showed some exercise routines that could be done at home without any specialist equipment. Their study showed an increase in muscle mass in their group of over-40s volunteers.

I thought it looked worth a try, so I followed it up on their web page.

I've been doing the exercises roughly three days a week since then and I have noticed a difference.  The main difference is that in spite of Oswin getting heavier, I now find it easier to lift her and can even toss her in the air and catch her.  (She'll be two in April if you want a gut feel for how heavy she is)

Some of them, I do at specific times, like the squats when I'm brushing my teeth, and others I just do as a set when I'm working through my wrist and shoulder exercises.  (I'm prone to RSI, and the wrist/shoulder exercises help a lot on that score).

I try to walk at least 4-5 mornings a week, and do exercises the physiotherapist gave me for my dodgy hip, but things like the squats I cannot do...

It's probably a good thing I work on the second story of a building where the lift is inconvenient and the filing and the ladies are downstairs... I'm up and down the stairs a dozen times a day.

Those stairs are probably doing wonders for your heart. I prefer stairs myself. I remember back in the days when I went to US conventions, you could always tell the British fans as they were the ones who didn't automatically head for the lift (and we really confused the Yanks when we arrived at a programme item before them!)

The health benefits are why - when they do put in a closer lift this year (one of my coworkers has a degenerative condition in her legs, over the last 3-4 years she's gone from plump but briskly healthy to a wheelchair, makes me realise how lucky I am) - I am determined not to weaken and to keep using the stairs.

Especially in winter when daily walks move to the evening and still get miserable sometimes...

I am sure I move a lot and work manually but wow, I would not be able to even toss Anicka in the air! To tell the truth I have problems to hold her longer. This is a good programme though and I think I will try it or at least some exersises. Thank you for the link.
You are very responsible and your body must thank you!:-)
