Weldmar Hospice Shop - books and CDs

I thought you'd like to see my book display.

If you start here and click through the half dozen pictures, then you should (fingers crossed) be able to read my comments with the pictures.

What an attractive, inviting shop! It really does tempt the casual browser.

I'm not surprised sales are up. Presentation is very important.

I kinda wanted the face out book on crafts. :^)

No, but thank you very much for the offer.

I'm trying to cut back on my impulse book buying (I sometimes fail to resist at my local thrift shop but at least I've not bought any online in a long time).

It's lovely to know I could have got that book, though. :^)

Have you offered your services to local businesses? For a small fee of course...

Clicking through the picures didn't cause the comment to change but watching the slideshow did.

Looks very good and the "CD now playing" is a brilliant idea!

I'd like to claim origin of that idea, but I actually saw it somewhere else and nicked it!

Who cares as long as it works :-)

That's better than most libraries and you have used all the tricks of the trade I took 15 years or so to discover.

Thanks! Some I was taught and some I developed myself. I sometimes stand at the till and just watch what people are looking at (or not looking at). It very rapidly shows you where you need to alter the display.

Now I wish I could visit and explore your fantastic shop!!! It is a dream!!!! We don´t have charity shops here, what a shame!
When I manage to get the England, I always search for charity shops. It is typical that other people from a coach look at me like I was crazy - a concept of a "charity shop" is unknown here and they think there is only junk there. Last time I bought Sharpe´s Gold CD for 2 Pounds!
Lovely, I like your shop very much - congratulations!

Do you have something that fills the same niche as charity shops? Do you have car boot sales, yard sales, jumble sales?

What do people do with old things they don't want any more?

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2013-12-01 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There are institution like Catholic Charity - nasty religious people!!!, they refuse most of things. Then Red Cross - they are the same minus religiosity:-( . There are some special events for collecting old things for homeless people or in case of natural/other disasters, there are official events. Then there are second-hand shops but these are mostly garments. Form time to time, you can find some jumble sales but very rarely. at least here where I live. Prague is a very cosmopolitan city, I am sure there are more opportunities.
I myself loaded a car with thigs after my husband passed away and brought then to my friend who has problems.
Books are a problem, the shops won´t take them apart from some exclusive intems...

Has your library ever thought about raising money by having an area to sell second-hand books?

Looks very good. I'd certainly be tempted into your shop by the window displays.

What do you do with very battered paperbacks, with the spine so broken you can barely read the title?

The really tatty ones get passed on for a pittance to one of these people who sell dirt cheap on Amazon.
