That's a great anecdote. This site (http://www.anitra.net/chanteys/bully.html) tries to give a similar explanation, but doesn't refer to ships, only drunken sailors. I wonder if the drunkenness came first, and only later did sailors call the ship "drunk" when it was wandering.
