Old Harry's Game

I seem to be logged in. I don't know if I've [livejournal.com profile] waveney or lj support to thank, but I shall go to bed a lot more relaxed tonight.

On another tack, I've been picking up a fair number of radio programmes on my Tivo including several old favourites.

One I've always had a soft spot for is 'Old Harry's Game', possibly the only sitcom set in Hell.

Perhaps I should explain that 'Old Harry' is one of many nicknames for Satan, the main character: devious, self-centred, wicked sense of humour (wonder why I like him so much -grin-). The other characters include the Professor - a mild-mannered academic who may possibly have got sent to Hell by mistake, who has become, rather ironically, Satan's confidante and verbal sparring partner. Then there's Scumspawn, a boot-licking demon, and Thomas - possibly the most selfish man ever sent to Hell.

It's on BBC 7, if you've not listened to it before, at 11pm on Tuesdays. Highly recommended.

I thought the original episode was very promising, but it didn't quite fulfil its promise, and by the second season it got rather repetitive, though it was still one of the better attempts among recent radio comedies.

In fact, I thought the first episode would have stood very well on its own - I particularly loved that wistful ending, where Spoiler!
Satan was talking to Scumspawn about their expulsion from Heaven, and how "a lot was said in the heat of the moment" - maybe, if they wrote God a letter saying they were sorry, he might reconsider? nah, probably not...
