Rant on flag colours

I passed through a journal the other week which had the tagline saying (roughly) that the writer lived "in the only country where you can live in red white and blue freedom"

I thought at the time: "I don't know what nationality you are, but you've already managed to insult the British, the French and the Americans"

I had of course, forgotten the right of Czechs, Dutch, Norwegians, Faroese, Icelanders, and a fair number of others to also be insulted...

It's a very popular combination of colours for a flag.

Indeed. (points to Australian flag)

I suspect the original author was American, because (a) they have much emphasis on the "red, white and blue" of their flag (b) the idea that the US invented freedom is an unfortunately common one from certain USians (c) for many USians, the rest of the world doesn't exist (apart from whoever they're making war on this week).

That would be my suspicion as well. Statistically it's a pretty good bet, as well, as there are more Americans online...

My follow-up thought would be: "If you have to actively tell yourself you live in freedom, are you really?"

I would the blogger is probably American as I have heard one call their flag The Old Red White and Blue.

That was my instant assumption. However, I'm now wondering if it was an English person having a dig at Americans.

There was a story on the news a couple of weeks ago about a pub landlady who won a victory over Sky allowing her to use a foreign satellite decoder box to show football in her pub.

The pub is less than a mile away from me in Portsmouth and is called "The Red, White and Blue" :-)

I went back to look and I think she was English, though I assumed American at the time. (though she's also changed the tag line, so it may have been a temporary jibe at someone)

Yes, I agree.
