watervole: (books)

The unexpected risk of programming...

It's an interesting task sorting out the programme for Odyssey.  It takes up several hours of my life each day, but that's not the biggest hazard.

It's the writers.  I get regular emails from writers who want to be on programme.  So, I chat to them to find out what kind of panels they'd be good on, take a peek at their books (to see if they're by well-known publishers), and sometimes take a look at their blogs to see what kind of people they're like and how they express themselves.

And they're such an interesting bunch of people!

If I'm not careful, I'm going to leave Odyssey with enough new books to keep me going for the next six years!

I've just scheduled a generic autograph session for Saturday in the middle of the day, and I think there's going to be a lot of people there...

BTW, I could use a volunteer to oversee the autograph session, just to make sure there's enough tables, and to run for snacks if there's any writers who have a long queue and need a drink or something to eat.  Anyone fancy this?  (The bad news is that it's up against Ben Goldacre and the Hay Lecture on Geoengineering...)

Only six years? I've calculated that I've enough books stacked up at home to keep me going for another twenty years (assuming I don't die first, of course).

I'm happy to wrangle. Just let me know time and place (Sat 12pm?). I understand one of my new friends - Gareth Powell - is going to be there. He's helping with Bristolcon and writes excellent science fiction. http://www.garethlpowell.com/

It runs from noon till 2pm, but it's fine to grab a quick snack in a quiet moment. (and fine for the writers likewise)

The main concern is to be there at least half an hour beforehand in case the hotel forget to put the tables out. We're using the main hotel lobby outside the dealer's room. It needs someone with a good dollop of common sense to work out how many tables will be needed (see how many writers are listed in the programme, add a couple who will join at the last minute, probably divide by two if space is tight) and how to arrange them.

After that, it's just a case of making sure they have water, tlc, and feel free to leave at any time if there's not enough punters. Also grab food for any who actually have a long queue and are there for both sessions (I don't expect this to be a problem, but sod's law always threatens).

I'm very glad you've offered! (and yes, Gareth will be there)

Many thanks!
