Veg mistakes for Beginners

When you get given plants or seeds with no instructions, it's very easy to make fatal mistakes.

The lady I visited yesterday had been given a few left over onion sets (thin of them as baby onions) by a friend and she'd done what seemed logical to her (and I can imagine a time when I might have done the same) - she'd planted them like bulbs, a few inches underground.

Onions don't work that way.  You plant them at surface level.  Dig a tiny hole with your trowel (don't push the onion down into the soil) and then put the onion set in it.  The top of the onion set should be just above the surface.

It's really too late for planting onion sets anyway this year, but I mention it so that you'll remember for next year.  Next year, also consider shallots.  They taste like a mild onion and can easily be grown in a small space.

(Does anyone want an occasional calendar of 'veg things to do at this time of year'?)

Yes please, including 'remember to order/buy these' this month as you'll need them in a few weeks time by which point it'll all be sold out' type comments. I won't be able to use it this year due to absence of a house, but hopefully by next year I will again have a garden.

i for onee am reading your growing articles.

I tried to grow various things from seed this year but they all died over easter. In particular I liked my Spring Onions a few years back but shallots sound like a good idea too.

any suggestions for grow bags now? They were used for tomatoes last year.

You'll have used up the nutrients by now, so I'd just sprinkle them over the soil to add organic matter.

I'd clear a small patch of soil to do actual growing. Remember that plants in soil cope better when you're away than plants in pots or grow bags.

Try planting rocket or radishes in soil - clear a patch and sow now.

Start lettuce in a seed tray (put the seed tray outside during the day so that the sun gets to it properly) and plant them out when they're an inch across/high.

Too late for shallots this year, but they'd probably do well in your garden next year.

Well, I'm finding your posts very interesting, and wondering how they will apply to where I live when I have actual dirt to use.

Presently what I have is a parking lot.

Yes please. I'm terrible at remembering to get my seeds started early enough.

Yes please, I need all the hints I can get

Yes please. I tend to think about it when we have nice weekends. By which time it's too late for so many things.

I'm in Scotland as you know and my onions were put in last month. My purple sprouting brocolli is growing happily and so are my betroots, potatos and my herbs. Even the tesco's coriander is still alive! And my beans are growing through their toilet rolls!

Yes yes yes! Not that I'm likely to do most of it, but it might be the push I need to get some done.

And you've reminded me to go and do things with pots and herbs.

i thought you had a flat...?

Do you have an allotment, window boxes, or have you moved?

[identity profile] darth-tigger.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Moved. Though actually all the herbs are in containers, being kept on a small patio. I thought it would be easier and more convenient that way.

Yes please to calender.

Although I don't have a garden yet and have never really gardened much before.. I'm quite interested in starting once I have the opportunity, so I'd love to start associating the time of year with what you should plant.

calender please

Yes, please.

Although growing onions is simple and rewarding, it falls into the category of "not worth it" for me. They take up quite a bit of space, and don't taste much different from bought ones (which are pretty cheap anyway). I would always do shallots instead. Or pick them all as spring onions and free up the space for something else, that's an option I suppose.
