Veg mistakes for Beginners
When you get given plants or seeds with no instructions, it's very easy to make fatal mistakes.
The lady I visited yesterday had been given a few left over onion sets (thin of them as baby onions) by a friend and she'd done what seemed logical to her (and I can imagine a time when I might have done the same) - she'd planted them like bulbs, a few inches underground.
Onions don't work that way. You plant them at surface level. Dig a tiny hole with your trowel (don't push the onion down into the soil) and then put the onion set in it. The top of the onion set should be just above the surface.
It's really too late for planting onion sets anyway this year, but I mention it so that you'll remember for next year. Next year, also consider shallots. They taste like a mild onion and can easily be grown in a small space.
(Does anyone want an occasional calendar of 'veg things to do at this time of year'?)

Yes please, including 'remember to order/buy these' this month as you'll need them in a few weeks time by which point it'll all be sold out' type comments. I won't be able to use it this year due to absence of a house, but hopefully by next year I will again have a garden.

I tried to grow various things from seed this year but they all died over easter. In particular I liked my Spring Onions a few years back but shallots sound like a good idea too.
any suggestions for grow bags now? They were used for tomatoes last year.

I'd clear a small patch of soil to do actual growing. Remember that plants in soil cope better when you're away than plants in pots or grow bags.
Try planting rocket or radishes in soil - clear a patch and sow now.
Start lettuce in a seed tray (put the seed tray outside during the day so that the sun gets to it properly) and plant them out when they're an inch across/high.
Too late for shallots this year, but they'd probably do well in your garden next year.

Presently what I have is a parking lot.

Yes yes yes! Not that I'm likely to do most of it, but it might be the push I need to get some done.
And you've reminded me to go and do things with pots and herbs.

Do you have an allotment, window boxes, or have you moved?

Although I don't have a garden yet and have never really gardened much before.. I'm quite interested in starting once I have the opportunity, so I'd love to start associating the time of year with what you should plant.
