Flickering screen problem

My monitor screen has been flickering badly of recent (I can get a really good strobe effect by waving my fingers in front of it)

It was having problems when my C drive was too full, but that's been fixed now and the flicker (which improved a lot when we cleared up the C drive) is now back again.

Any ideas as to what might be causing the problem? It's at a level where it's starting to make my eyes uncomfortable.

Now solved - thanks, [livejournal.com profile] davidcook .

Are you using Windows ? Assuming you have XP or something similar :
Right-click on the desktop background area, which should pop up a menu - one of the options should be "Properties". Select that, and you should get a window popping up called "Display Properties". There should be an "Advanced" button on the lower right corner - click on that to get another window. Unfortunately, this will probably be specific to the manufacturor and make of your graphics card, but it should have a number of tabs, one of which is labelled "Monitor". If you can find something like that, there should be some sort of setting labelled "Screen refresh rate" - if that is under 60Hz, that could explain the flicker you're seeing.
(Depending on your sensitivity to strobing, you might notice it up to 80Hz or so).

Also, I'd unplug each end of the monitor cable and then plug it in again, make sure the screws are reasonably well tightened.

Finally, how old is the monitor ? If it is flickering, I'm assuming it's a CRT type - it could be that it is reaching the end of its useful life. Have you noticed any changes in colour or brightness ?

Fabulous! Changing the screen refresh rate has made a massive improvement!

Many many thanks!

Glad to be of use :)

(putting the "remote" into remote desktop support !)
