Scrabble

Trying to get a decent Scrabble game these days is a real gamble.

Facebook currently seems to offer Wordscraper (which doesn't use all the rules of Scrabble and has a different board) or Scrabble Worldwide.  In theory, Scrabble Worldwide is the better option and appears to be legal, but in practise the site is down most of the time and a lot of the turn notifications don't seem to reach me.

Lexulous - http://www.lexulous.com/ - seems to be working almost properly now.  The bugs have been reducing over the last few weeks and email games are starting to work. Notifications of turns are slow getting to me though.

Lexulous is probably the overall best at the moment, but is lacking the Facebook interface that makes it so convenient to challenge one's friends.  My main fear is that like Scrabulous before it (because it is just Scrabulous with a different name) it will end up being taken down for Copyright reasons.

I'm starting to get back into the swing of playing again.  It's surprising how you can lose the ability to mentally juggle letters, but it's reassuring how quickly it comes back again.  There's also the pleasure of seeing good words/moves, even when they're played against you.  [livejournal.com profile] megamole  just played 'qadi' on a double word score.  That's the kind of word I love.  I love it because it's a word that has a real meaning that I already knew  (a judge of Islamic law), but is also a lovely word for Scrabble players as it uses Q without needing a U.

My other Scrabble annoyance is that my access to the OED (via Dorset Libraries) has got almost impossible to use.  The log-in procedure has got messier and the login expires very quickly. Thus, I can't follow my normal habit of looking up obscure Scrabble words to learn what they mean.  Other online dictionaries don't have the full Scrabble vocabulary - there's some pretty obscure words in SOWPODS (the combined list of UK/US valid words).

Anyhow, if you want a game, challenge me on Lexulous (on the grounds that I haven't even been able to access the Scrabble Worldwide site today or most of yesterday).  Usual caveats apply.  I may spend long gaps between turns if my neck/shoulder start playing up.  Part of the time you'll be playing Richard as well as we like to see which of us can find the best move.

So, who fancies a game?

LOL! Mind you, I'd play it anyway. This is Scrabble!

Fancy a game?

BTW are you doing anything the weekend 15-16 November, we're contemplating playing lots of games....

I need to work out what email address I'm using on it, but then I'll probably give you a game. I need the practice because I'm not that good at it, but I am improving through practice. (I have a tendency to put words down because they're cool, rather than going for something that gets a high score which doesn't help.)

Well, you can always use a new one if you can't remember.

I do remember, I just don't think it's the one I want to use and I need to investigate where to change it and whether I want to.

Weird, I've not had any problems with Scrabble Worldwide at all, has hung precisly once for a few seconds and then it was fine a half hour later... I don't have the notifications turned on so no clue on those. I tried Lexulous but didn't like the interface much, hope you can find more people to play against on that though if it works best for you.

And qadi is a fab word *memorises*

Odd, I'm trying for the nth time today, and I still can't access my games.

Scrabble Worldwide would be fine - if I could access it. I want to play 'jive' against you and I can't get to the board.
