Ipods are overpriced and unreliable, but they are supposed to be more usable than rivals. I have an Xclef which I think is terrific, but I didn't require it to be especially portable or usable. Useful discussion here (http://undyingking.livejournal.com/21155.html?style=mine) from when I was looking -- specifics will be out of date now, but genreal discussion is mostly still valid.
Glad that you haven't had trouble with yours, but surprised that you haven't heard of other people doing so. Eg in this (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2211428,00.asp) recent PC Magazine survey, 6% of iPods needed repair, worse than all but one other manufacturer. It's improved from the 2005 equivalent (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1868129,00.asp) when as many as 9% needed repair, but still pretty unimpressive.
If you download the data for the survey you linked to, you will see that the iPod got the highest score for reliability of any brand of MP3 player. I think the relatively high number needing repair is simply down to the combination of people using them more, and having confidence that Apple's warranty repair service will actually work. Remember, an MP3 player that's sitting in a drawer because it's never used is unlikely to be sent in for repair.

That is certainly a possible interpretation... whether it's more likely than "they break more easily", I guess watervole will have to judge.
