Cancelling Sky

I've been meaning to cancel Sky for a while now.  90% of what I watch is available on Freesat (which only costs £20 if you already have a dish and Sky box).  The remaining 10% is stuff I can rent on DVD or stuff that I like to watch with Henry when he's home from university so don't mind if I see it later on terrestrial or DVD.

Finally got around it today.  Was talking to the man at Sky who was trying to talk me out of it and sell me Sky phone services and all the rest of it.  I was content to let him waffle until I remembered we were on an 0870 number.  I said "I'm sorry, but we're on an 0870 number, this call is costing me money.  If Sky want us to hang around, they ought to get an 0800 number, please skip to the end."

Blow me!  He did exactly what I asked.  He immediately said (politely) that he'd put the stuff I needed in the post.

Top marks to a helpful man at Sky.  (they may have lost me as a customer at present, but they've also just improved their chances of getting me back in the future if I feel rich again)

I did use to use that at one time, but I found it had a fair proportion of dead numbers and ones that often got you not exactly where you wanted to be. eg. You often ended up with the department dealing with international enquiries.

I've used it ,any times, with no problems - If you can't get what you need out of whoever you speak to, they can usually put you through to the people you need.

And for me, adding an extra 30 seconds to the call duration is a bargain if you avoid paying the Extortion Rate that non-geographics charge.

Gosh, good for you for getting a word in edgeways, and good for him for actually doing it. Stupidly, I get worried about seeming rude, and find it so stressful trying to interrupt that I just let them waffle. But then, if they've phoned me, it's not costing me anything....

*smile* Hello!

That's one of the things I love about LJ: it's not just that there are groups of friends here, who themselves might never have met in any other way, but it's the way that - even when those groups seem a world away from each other - you can discover and make connections between them. Thank you for commenting - that's made my evening!

Congrats on finding a helpful telesalesy type person!

I honestly think the only reason(s) I keep Sky is Sky One and SciFi.. and maybe FX.. but it's definitely on the list of things to go if money gets tight. Pretty much everything makes its way to terrestrial or ITV3 eventually :)

Now you're making me feel guilty! When we moved in the house had a Sky aerial but we've never subscribed. In town last week there was a Sky sales team so I asked whether they removed unwanted Sky aerials. The answer was a blunt No.
