Poi at Orbital

As the lurgi receds further, I'm getting more active again.

I was listening to the song 'Viva las Vegas' the other day and realised it would be perfect for a poi routine.  It's got just the right rhythm and bounce to it.

So, I'm starting to work up a poi routine for the Orbital cabaret.  It's starting to come together already - I've found some good linking moves that help change forward spins into backward ones.  (Some figures work better backwards than forwards)  The trick is to get every figure flowing into the next one without any breaks.

I've loaded the song onto my MP3 player and will probably be outside (not enough space indoors) getting some practice between now and Easter.

Who else is doing something for the cabaret?  I'm crossing my fingers for some good filkers, dancers, comics, etc.  The wealth of fannish talent never ceases to amaze me.

My friends [livejournal.com profile] inflatablefish and [livejournal.com profile] multiclassgeek are plotting a comedic mini-play for the cabaret, I believe. I am trying to avoid being in it, since I have a very annoying tendancy to get crippling stage-fright.

Yes, we have a short sketch lined up (Becky has just badgered me into letting you know what it's about to help scheduling etc), assuming we can shanghai someone else to do the part I originally planned for her - I'm emailing more details to the masquerade@orbital address, I hope this is okay.

Sounds great to me. If you ask on the Orbital LJ, I expect you'll find a suitable volunteer.

I'd like to find a couple of similar minded people to perform a close-harmony performance - a madrigal or barber shop. I just don't know anyone with any interest. Plus the added problem that it's difficult to make it relevanet to F&SF.

[identity profile] makyo.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that sounds fun. If you need an extra tenor then I'd be interested.

Brilliant!

[identity profile] djelibeybi-meg.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Now all we need is a soprano, a second soprano, a musical director and someone to write appropriate lyrics to "Brightly Dawns Our Wedding Day"

AND LOTS OF PRACTICE!!

Seriously, if you have something in mind, I'm game.

Now all we need is...
... and probably another tenor, because I'm probably not loud enough on my own :)

Re: Brilliant!

[identity profile] djelibeybi-meg.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet you'd be loud enough if you were enjoying yourself and well rehearsed. Anyway, it's not about loud, it's about balance. I can balance.

Re: Brilliant!

[identity profile] makyo.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm quite tempted, actually. It's years since I've sung in a small choir, and I do miss it - the university chorus is fun, but much larger (and is therefore limited to large choral pieces: this term we're doing Verdi's Macbeth, for example) and I'm not really good enough to be in the (auditioned) chamber choir.

I'll try to remember to bring my copy of the Penguin Book of English Madrigals with me, then, and anything else which seems appropriate.

Is it sufficiently tempting for us to collar you for the cabaret?

(g'wan, g'wan! *nudge*)

Not if I'm the only one, sorry. I'll bring some music with me, and if we can find
at least one soprano, alto and bass (and preferably two, plus a second tenor) then maybe, otherwise no - I'm just not confident (or loud) enough to stand up on stage and sing on my own, I'm afraid.

Why not ask on your LJ or on the Orbital one to see if you can find any more singers?

[identity profile] sugoll.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know "Brightly Dawns...", but you mentioned American Pie in your other post... I've got some Buffy lyrics for that if you're interested; they've never made it into the Redemption cabarets because I didn't get my head around the middle choruses having a different arrangement - but you're considerably more capable than I am, so I'm sure you could fix that. :-)

If you could let me have them, I could try to get them spread around before the con. Not so sure about the "more capable" statement but I am enthusiastic.

Ohh, I *love* close harmony. My voice is to dodgy to sing now, but I love to listen to it. Why not ask on the Orbital LJ?

Er, who said it had to be relevant? You think poi are F+SF...

Just make it good!

[identity profile] djelibeybi-meg.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a nice voice. It needn't be for the cabaret.. we could just have some singing fun. Do you know any other singers?

I'm sure [personal profile] the_magician could contribute and he may even be able to come up with a madrigal filk.

Sadly, if I sing at present, I will lose my voice. I haven't dared risk singing for since around September, apart from a few bars here and there. Even talking for more than a few minutes is dodgy at present.

[identity profile] djelibeybi-meg.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That must be so frustrating. Hopefully, there will be musik at the con and you can listen and enjoy at your leisure.

SMS is plotting something. All I know is it involves cardboard boxes...

I like cardboard boxes.

Poi! My niece is in a poi group, but then she is Kiwi :)

There are poi groups?

Any locally? Or just in NZ? come to think of it, I did once see a performance by a poi group from NZ at a folk festival. I've only seen it done solo otherwise.

I did a poi workshop at a convention last year and may run one at Redemption.

[identity profile] sophiedb.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that Jayde does poi (singing & dancing) through her school. She - and Katelyn! - have Maori blood through their dads and her Granny is keen that she learns at least some of that culture :)

There may be a group linked to New Zealand House up in London - they have Maori language sessions, so you never know! I've never heard of one down this way though.

It might be fun to start a group up locally.
