Childbirth risks

Unless your baby is in a breach position, the risk of a Cesarean birth is double that of a vaginal delivery.  (I hadn't expected the difference to be so great, but that is the result of a massive study, and interestingly enough, the risk is to the baby as well as the mother)

I think they're talking about routine pre-planned Caesarians, not ones where there is a clear reason to opt for a Caesarian. And I wish the Indie would make that clear, because breech presentation is *not* the only medical reason for a Caesarian to be planned ahead of time.

I'm all in favour of discouraging Caesarians that aren't in response to a clear clinical issue, but I don't think much of the swing to the opposite extreme either. I know several women for whom the choice was pretty much Caesarian from the word go or trying a natural birth and getting extremely badly damaged in the process, *if* they didn't die. And they got a certain amount of "oh, just too posh to push" unpleasantness from people who'd bought into the idea that all pre-planned Caesarians are just medicla over-servicing.

Interesting link, thank you!

I'm particularly interested in this because my mother had me by Caesarian after a lengthy and unproductive labor, and the doctors told her she'd never be able to safely give birth naturally. Brother #1 was a planned Caesarian. My mom got fed up with the idea after that, and proceeded to have two more sons and three daughters vaginally. Heh. No complications with any of them, for mother or child.

In fact, she may also find this study of interest; I'm passing it on.

Thanks for the article! Though the idea of having a caesarian scares me more than the idea of giving birth naturally [fingers crossed neither of which will be happening for a long time!]

I hadn't realised there would be such a risk to the sprog though.

Thank you again for the fantastic links that you show us.

Thanks. I try and pass on links that I find interesting, but I don't always know how many people find them as interesting as I do!

I always enjoy your links and posts on various subjects. Sometimes I feel that all I have to say is, "Interesting!" so I don't always comment.

That is interesting. I wonder if what is really needed is a safe way of training doctors to use forceps. Decent models of vaginas and baby heads to allow them to try all the traditional maneouvers without risking injury to a real mother/baby.
