Ladies and Gents toilets

Had lunch in a small cafe this afternoon. Went to the toilet afterwards. The ladies was in use, so I used the gents - they're both identical, one stall each, no urinal.
Do other people do this? When there's only two loos and they're in separate rooms, what is the point of restricting them by gender?

I'm reminded of a French restuarant I know - a single big communal area with wahbasins and stalls, and a small area behind a "western bar door" for the urinals. Seemed eminently sensible and practical....
