Ladies and Gents toilets

Had lunch in a small cafe this afternoon. Went to the toilet afterwards. The ladies was in use, so I used the gents - they're both identical, one stall each, no urinal.
Do other people do this? When there's only two loos and they're in separate rooms, what is the point of restricting them by gender?

I guess Sweden is ahead of us there. It makes far better sense, especially as there are nearly always longer queues outside Ladies loos in any case. (We often have things like sanitary towels to worry about, quite apart from not peeing standing up)
