My Fair Lady

I've just been listening to Desert Island Discs.  I'd never previously heard of Lord Joffe (he was involved in Nelson Mandela's trial) but his tastes in music turn out to overlap with mine a lot.

One of his songs was from 'My Fair Lady', which I've always enjoyed.  His choice, however, was from the original stage version with Julie Andrews, rather than the movie version that I'm familiar with.

Wow!

It was a fantastic performance.  I think I need to hear her sing the rest of the show!

[livejournal.com profile] gerald has only just (as in, about six months ago) forgiven Audrey Hepburn for getting 'Julie Andrew's part' in the movie of My Fair Lady...

A reasonable position, as it's one of the great casting injustices of Hollywood. Mind you, if she had got the role, she wouldn't have done Mary Poppins, and won the Oscar, and possibly wouldn't have got The Sound of Music either.

I've never heard the Julie Andrew's version. I love the film, although Rex Harrison can't sing as such his voice is so expressive in the Higgins part that it works really well.

"I can do without you"

It was the sheer quality of the singing and the fact that every word was clear and the sheer scorn she managed to put into every word. Superb.
