Finished 'The Subtle Knife', which is a better book than 'Northern Lights' though I'm darned if I can decide who are the good guys and who are the bad ones, if indeed there is a 'good' side. I'm rather reminded of the 4th season of Babylon 5...
Have reserved 'Amber Spyglass', but am meanwhile reading 'Downbelow Station' which is hard work on occasion, but is by far the better book. The depth of character is much greater and dealt with in a far subtle manner. It takes good writing skills for you to see a POV character as self-centred and power-hungry when in his own eyes, he is hard done by and people scheme against him.
The politics in 'Downbelow Station' are complex and the back story has too much info dumping at the start, but here, we have a world where everyone is struggling. Different power groups are all trying to do what they see as best for their people and most of them are being pushed into impossible situations and having to push someone else into an impossible situation to try and resolve one of their own problems. There's a gritty realism to the whole story and I have absolutely no idea how it is going to end.
Far more worthy of its Hugo award (in my opinion at least) than 'To Your Scattered Bodies Go'.

Easy. It's whatever side Vir is on.
(gives Vir a cuddle, just because.)
