the curse of well-meaning people

I went into town yesterday to buy a birthday present for my nephew and bumped
into a old friend who'd heard about my sister.

She must have spent 20 mins offering sympathy, wanting to know all the details,
etc. She meant well, but it threw me off balance for most of the rest of the
day.

When I meet other people I haven't seen for a long time, I find I'm falling into
a safe pattern.

"How are you?"

"Not so bad." ducks all the painful conversations.

No replies please.
