Sheffield

I think I'm falling in love with Sheffield...

I've been away visiting my parents near Manchester, but I discovered that my cheapest option for the journey actually involved going home via Sheffield and Cambridge (taking in the Sheffield SF pub meet and the Cambridge ZZ9 party en route).  This was very handy as one of my sisters lives in Sheffield.

I met up with her at the station (newly refurbished and looking really good), went outside and saw a fantastic water feature

We went on into the city centre, via an attractive new avenue, passing through

bought lunch at a little cafe in the Winter Gardens

went onwards via the Supertram to the excellent ice rink and generally had a very enjoyable joy.

Large parts of the city are being regenerated and there's a lot of use of open space and water features.  There were more than I've shown here, but life's too short to find photos of everything.  Essentially, it looks to be a fascinating city and I hope I can find excuses to go there again before too long.  Sheffield also has the added bonus of being in the middle of some absolutely wonderful countryside.

[livejournal.com profile] ellarien, whose mother lives about fifteen minutes walk from my Dad (but who lives is Tucson herself) posted some excellent pictures of Sheffield's many gardens recently.

I have real problems driving around Sheffield nowadays, because they've changed everything, but I'm still very fond of it - though I prefer Leeds as a shopping centre and try desperately to avoid the dreadfulness that is Meadowhall.

Gosh, I've seen that water feature any number of times, and never looking so pretty! I wonder if the photo was taken in the aftermath of the floods? There seem to be barriers and men in helmets out in force, though the station appears to be open - I believe it was cut off by water for a while, though it was fine by the time I visited a week later.
