Interview Meme ([personal profile] dougs

Interview Meme THE RULES!
1 -- Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 -- I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 -- You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 -- You'll include this explanation.
5 -- You'll place a link from this journal to your answers.
6 -- You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

[livejournal.com profile] dougs asked:
1. Your affinity with nature is clear. What made you choose this specific species with which to identify on-line?

Three reasons

The water vole is Britain's fastest declining native mammel.

Becasue I'm a committed conservationist and it helps flag up that interest if anyone wants to raise issues from how to manage heathland to global warming or anything else. (I studied environmental science at university. It taught me just enough to know how much I don't know...)
Because I saw my first water vole in Swanage last year and sat and watched him while I ate my lunch and he was unutterably cute. That was when I passed from
'water voles ought to be conserved because they are a native species and they're in decline' to 'water voles should be looked after because I love them'.

1a. Does it predate your advent on LiveJournal?
No, I'd never used it before. Everyone seemed to use odd names here, so I looked for one that fitted. If I had my time again, I'd probably go for a variation on my own name. You'll probably notice that it now says 'Judith Pr'
and I'll probably expand that at some point. I've found it very frustrating when someone I know turns out to be on LJ and I didn't know who they were, and indeed, it's very hard remembering who is who of the people I do know who are
here.

2. You said that you'd named your children after SI units.
Had this been deliberate, what would the third have been called?

Pascal, theoretically. (there's a tale behind Henry's name and as he isn't
here to read this, I can cheerfully embarass him. We wanted to involve his
older bother in choosing a name for the new baby, so we started making lists of
names and asking him which ones he liked. After a while, the pattern became
clear, so we started a new list - using Rev Audry as a name book.)

3. Rope, steel, leather, duct tape, and a fifth medium of your choice. Some words on each, on their advantages and disadvantages, and a reasoned case for which is best.
Okay, cut tag for those who don't want to know...

Rope - lovely stuff. I like the way you can feel it and touch it and manipulate it. I like the fact that you can create with it and build something up gradually. It's also very versatile.

Steel - has no mental associations for me. A friend gave me a pair of handcuffs once, but frankly I've never been tempted to try them. They look too darn uncomfortable.

Leather - cuffs are quick to put on. I'm not sure if that's a pro or a con. I rather like the fact that rope is slower - it's almost a method of communication. On the other hand, leather smells nice. Leather has other uses and soft leather is beautiful stuff. I like it, but not to the degree of it being a fetish.

Duct tape - anyone who uses it on skin has to be willing to have the hair pulled off when it's removed. I guess it could be used to some effect over cling film, but it lacks aesthetics. Effective, but not beautiful.

Silk scarves - wonderful texture. Gorgeous colour. Can be used to touch skin. Can be used to tie knots in theory, but there's always that lingering fear of not being able to undo the knot and having to waste a good scarf...

Which is best? No contest -- rope. You want a reasoned case? The one to go with is the one that is most erotic for you (or the person you're working with, but that's unspecified in this case). Rope is erotic for me because I have one very powerful memory associated with it.

4. How did you get started in fandom?
Found the Blake's 7 fanclub address on the back of the video tape. Discovered
lit fandom from other Redemption committee members. I also got heavily into
zine publishing within less than a year of entering fandom.
4a. Why do you remain in it?
Because I love the people. Intelligent, fond of bad puns, writers of silly songs, commentators on intelligent stories, people who aren't afraid of something different, people who respect different genders/sexual habits/race/beliefs. I also love conventions.
4c. How would you lure an outsider into the fold?
Drag them to a convention. Or show them fanfic depending on who they were.
5. If you could somehow make your voice and your shoulder and the rest of your body work perfectly ... and you had to give up your singing in exchange, would you do so?
That's a tough one. As you've allowed me to keep the voice for talking, I think I'd go for it - I'd still have some music via playing instruments. I could still write songs and play them for other people - but I'd certainly miss singing.
5a. If you had to give up your writing? Why, or why not?
Half the reason the shoulder gets bad is becasue I spend too much time writing. I ration myself, but still push the limits when I'm writing to a friend or I'm absorbed in composing a story. If I can keep e-mail, but give up fiction writing then I might possibly do it. I can still create stories in my mind even if they never get onto paper. Mind you, it might annoy the people who want volume 3 of my Stargate trilogy... But then if the voice was perfect, I'd probably spend more time on the phone, but then so many of my friends are in differnt time zones...

Good answers! I learned some things, especially from #1.

We wanted to involve his older bother...

Assuming it wasn't meant deliberately, this is an awesome typo. :) (I have a younger bother, myself!)
