10 ways to be happier and more relaxed

1.  Don't watch TV late at night.  Listen to relaxing music, sew, read, chat, for the last 3/4 hour before you go to bed.

2.  Keep regular hours.  Aim to be in bed by 10.30 (that's what the record function on the video is for).

3.  Try and do something that will help another person - it will make you feel better about yourself.

4.  Whenever you want to eat confectionary, eat a piece of fruit first.  It'll reduce mood swings from sugar highs and lows. (fruit releases sugars more gradually)

5.  Go for lots of walks - preferably at least three times a week for half an hour each.  Pretty scenary is a big bonus, but anywhere you like walking will do.

6.  Phone a friend - if you can arrange to meet up, that's a bonus, but friends are always good.

7.  Say 'hello' to people you meet and smile as you do.  You'll make their day a little brighter as well.

8.  Grow something, even if it's only a pot plant on the kitchen windowsill - we have an intimate connection with plants.

9.  Give yourself a small treat each day.   Don't rush it - take the time to relax and enjoy it properly.  One square of excellent chocolate savoured while sitting in the sunshine is worth ten squares eaten while rushing to do something else.

10.  At the end of each day, focus on five good things in your life.  It doesn't matter how big/small they are.  Count them individually and think about them if you have difficulty sleeping.  Accentuate the positive.

Wise words ... :-)

These are wonderful. Thank you!

But what if you can't think of five things?!

You work harder to find five things.

A few examples if you're finding it hard:

1. You've paid the rent/mortgage for this month/own the house.

2. The person you love is alive and loves you back again.

3. You saw a butterfly and stopped to watch it.

4. A world that has cheese in it cannot be all bad.

5. You just saw/talked to a friend/family member.

6. Disease/disability x is less bad than normal.

7. The bank account is positive.

8. The sun is shining and little girls are playing outside.

9. The taste of raspberries.

10. You managed to complete five tasks (any task counts, no matter how minor. On particularly bad days, I award myself a point for every item I clear from my desk, even if it's only an envelope.)

4. A world that has cheese in it cannot be all bad.

...Unless you have lactose intolerance and love cheese!

5. You just saw/talked to a friend/family member.

...Usually a reason for me to seek out blessings to count rather than one of the blessings.

It's a good approach, though. Let's see...

A world that has mead in it...

Ah mead! I see you're getting the correct idea.

And with mead, the other four good things are kind of optional. :)

A great post -- thanks for it. I especially liked #4.

This is really a very nice ( and working!)thing - even if not all the points, most really help. The worst (and impossible)for me is to keep regular hours...Yawn.
