The Letter Meme

To do this meme you need to be given a letter. When you've been given a letter, you must list ten things you like that begin with that letter. If anyone comments, give them a letter and tell them to do this meme, preferably to the letter.

1.  Friends - life without friends would be unimaginable.  Friends are why I run conventions, why I enjoy gaming, why I got married ("happiness is being married to your best friend"), why I enjoy the company of my sons,  why I make sure I can get cheap overseas phone calls and one of the reasons I'm going to enjoy the allotments (I'm getting to know several of the people there, and they're a good bunch).

2.  Family - I live and breathe family.  My friends are welcome to come and visit any hour of the day or night, but family goes further than that.  There probably are things that I wouldn't do for my sons or my nephews, but it's a pretty short list.  (Circumstances have tended to cut me off from my neices - I'd still do a lot for them, but not as much as for my nephews)  My sons are the delight of my life.  I take shameless delight in much that they do, tease them something rotten (as they do me), nag them perpetually to remind them that I want grandchildren and enjoy their company enormously.  Amazingly, they put up with me!   One of them even bought me a badge "Proud to be an embarassing parent"

3.  Fruit - I love fresh fruit, especially soft fruit like raspberries.  One of my reasons for wanting an allotment was so that I could have more of it.

4.  Fruit bats - I was at Jersey zoo a decade or so ago and I saw   Rodrigues fruit bats
They looked just like winged teddy bears.  I fell in love and have had a soft spot for them ever since.

5. Folk songs - Ever since I was a kid, I've loved folk music.  We learnt folk songs at school and I still remember them word for word (once I've learnt a song, I never forget it - I have a very verbal memory).  I grew up listening to the likes of the Spinners and going to folk festivals brought the love right back again.

6.  Folk music/dancing - I love dancing to good traditional style music.  There's an enormous range and I love most of it.  One of the things I really miss now the boys are grown up is that we no longer spend a week each summer at Sidmouth Folk Festival.

7.  Fashion - Never could get on with it.  About every ten years, something I like become fashionable, and then it passes and my clothes are out of step with everyone else once more.  I like long skirts that swirl.  I like bright colours.  I like ethnic patterns.  I like t-shirts.  I to wear things that are comfortable and have pockets.  I adore charity shops and I like to wear silk.  One of my minor pleasures in life is when someone admires something I'm wearing and I can admit to getting it in Oxfam for four quid.

8.  Flowers, especially wild ones.  If it wasn't dark right now, I'd get Richard to take a photo of the wisteria in the back garden.  It's in full bloom, smells beautiful, and I'm hopeful that the blackbirds are going to nest there again.

9.  Fetish - does little for me as a rule.  Rubber has no interest at all; leather looks good and smells nice, but isn't what I'd call a fetish.  You'd never get me in a corset - though I think other people look good in them.  Under the right circumstances, rope can hold my interest.

10.  Forests - the world needs forests.  It needs them desperately.  If you just want to do one thing today to help save the planet, promise me that you'll never buy anything made of wood that does not have an FSC label.

I love raspberries.

I'm sorry, if I did that, I'd never buy anything made of wood. I've never seen an FSC label anywhere. I thought buying pine furniture (from pine plantations) was good enough.
How do the wood products from Oxfam rate?

On the upside, I always buy recycled toilet paper. And I'm glad to say that "Safe" (that's the brand of toilet paper I get) have also brought out recycled tissues, so I'll buy those too, once I use up my current supply.

I don't know if the FSC scheme operates in Australia. It's not hard to find FSC stuff over here as one of the big DIY chains stocks it.

Pine from well-managed plantations should be okay, and recycled stuff is always worth a bonus point.

I don't know about Oxfam stuff.

Some blackbirds built a nest in the wisteria at the end of my garden last year as well. This year they started nestbuilding earlier, and since the wisteria didn't provide any cover at that time the blackbirds built their nest in the birdtable of the house nextdoor.

Bang goes my prediction that Flanders and Swann would be in there somewhere...

Probably would have been if I was more awake. It was just a case of what came to mind at the time.

I'm also surprised that you didn't have Filk in there.

(once I've learnt a song, I never forget it - I have a very verbal memory)
I'm with you on that. One of my favourite songs I learned in junior school and haven't heard since - except by me. Though I often forget guitar accompaniments if I haven't played them for a while. In those circumstances, I need to stop thinking and let my fingers shape themselves from the subconscious.

I'd have hated to be too obvious! (And filk only popped into my mind when I'd already written down ten others) After all, it wasn't a list of favourite things (though most of them were)

Would you like a 'P'?
