Insurance adverts

I get really annyoed by statements such as:

"four out of five people paid less for their home insurance when they switched to us"

The other one in five were obviously stupid and, of course, all those who compared the price and didn't switch aren't included in the statistics.

It's such a totally obiously stupid claim that I'm amazed anyone ever falls for it, yet people obviously do or they wouldn't keep trying it.

The other one in five may have had a reason other than price to switch they don't have to be stupid.

I think most of the other one in five are first home buyers who didn't have home insurance before. :)

Except that the ad refers to 'customers who switched'...

Ah, just occasionally, you get an ad that's honest, and they're a joy to behold. F'rinstance, the Vimto ad from years gone, where a customer in a swanky restaurant was asking the waiter whether they had anything other than Vimto. "I'm afraid not, sir," said the waiter. "This is a Vimto commercial after all."

Marvellous. Would have convinced me me to buy some, had the product not been so named that it makes me think of toilet cleaner.

Or the 'love it or hate it' Marmite ads. Some of those were really good.

And i wonder how many of that 4/5 that saved money lost features and coverage without knowing it?

Hard to say. I always check a specific set of features when I'm looking for coverage. I like to have legal insurance for example. I also check that the insurance will be valid if I run a business from home (that's a common exclusion and would invalidate my cover).

My main peeve is simply that the people who didn't change insurer are not included in the statistic. By definition, they didn't save money.

Motor insurance is as bad - but it's surprising how much you can save by shopping around. The companies rely on peoples apathy and jack the renewals up. (Try comparing a renewal with a new policy on the same company sometime - you might be surprised!) I saved about £300 pa each on two cars by switching from one of the "big boys" to a smaller outfit which (on first renewal) have remained competitive!

Hmm. Presumably it's such good insurance that they were willing to pay more.

I've occasionally been offered a 30 day free trial of insurance related things. Not quite sure how you can determine the quality of insurance in 30 days. Are you meant to sabotage something and make a claim to see if you like it?
