Lego is wonderful

I'm playing the music for the ceilidh workshop at Redemption. One of the dances Amelia has chosen is three-handed reel. I was having real problems working out how to fit the music to this, as I couldn't remember whether you pass the same hand or the alternate hand as you go round the corner of the reel. The rule is different depending on whether you are dancing a three-handed, or four-handed reel.

I tried walking through a three-handed reel with Richard, but this was tricky with one person missing...

We tried using Phil, our beeblebear, as an extra person in the dance, but we lost track of which paw he was using.

Then, Richard had an inspiration. He went upstairs and came back with a group of Lego men. We arranged them in a line and proceeded to move them through a three-handed reel. It worked beautifully.

I can now tell you that when doing three-handed reel, you will need to use the same hand twice when you turn round at the end of the line. This in turn, means that I can now pace the music correctly when I'm playing for the dancers.

I'm looking forward to the workshop. I've deliberately chosen to use several tunes but I will also potentially be playing in the Sharpe session. It's a useful excuse to practice Brighton Camp and Over the Hills and Far Away.

Incidentally, Dragon is learning. When I ask for the words three handed, it now spells the word real correctly, i.e. three-handed reel.
