Pollution in the Ganges

The Ganges is now so polluted that Hindu holy men are threatening to commit mass suicide unless something is done.

Rather than do anything to reduce the pollution going into the river, the response from the authorities was to release irrigation water from behind dams to dilute the pollution during the festival... (farmers say there may not now be enough water later in the year)
